Job description
Some careers have more impact than others.
If you’re looking for a career where you can make a real impression, join HSBC and discover how valued you’ll be.
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.
We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering
Principal responsibilities
The Performance Testing Engineer will be responsible for defining and executing performance testing for HSBC Open Banking Cloud solutions, ensuring services meet non-functional requirements for scalability, resilience and stability. The role will work closely with engineering, SRE/DevOps, and product teams to identify bottlenecks early, drive performance improvements, and embed performance testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Define performance testing strategy, approach and success criteria aligned to Open Banking non-functional requirements (throughput, latency, error rates, capacity and scalability).
- Design, build and maintain automated performance test suites (load, stress, endurance/soak, spike), integrating execution into CI/CD pipelines.
- Create realistic workload models using production-like usage patterns, including API-level test scenarios and data design suitable for performance testing.
- Analyse results (response times, resource utilisation, thread/connection behaviour, queueing), identify bottlenecks and provide actionable recommendations to development and platform teams.
- Collaborate with SRE/DevOps to set up performance environments, monitoring, dashboards and alerts using tooling such as Splunk, AppDynamics and CloudWatch.
- Validate performance of cloud-native components (for example API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), load balancers, databases) and support tuning activities.
- Produce clear performance reports and communicate risks, remediation plans and trends to stakeholders; promote performance engineering best practices across the team.
- Support releases by providing performance sign-off evidence and contribute to incident triage where performance degradation is suspected.
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor Degree of Engineering with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong hands-on experience in performance testing and performance engineering for APIs and distributed systems.
- Proven experience with performance test tools such as JMeter and/or Gatling (or equivalent), including scripting, parameterisation, correlation and result analysis.
- Experience implementing performance testing in CI/CD (for example Jenkins) and using version control and collaboration tooling (Jira, GitHub, Confluence).
- Good understanding of AWS and cloud-native architectures, including performance characteristics of networking, load balancing, auto-scaling and container platforms.
- Strong skills in monitoring/observability and performance diagnostics using tools such as Splunk, AppDynamics and CloudWatch; ability to interpret metrics, logs and traces.
- Working knowledge of Linux and scripting (Python and/or Shell) to automate test execution, environment checks and reporting.
- Strong understanding of non-functional requirements, resilience patterns and high availability concepts; ability to translate requirements into measurable test outcomes.
- Good to have banking domain knowledge and familiarity with Open Banking/API ecosystems.
You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
