We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Assistant Vice President Finance Operations
Purpose of the role
Global Finance Operations Center (GFOC) provides a variety of financial support services to business partners over the HSBC Group. As part of the financial control team, we are primarily responsible for all the month close activities that lead up to the preparation of the financial statements.
In this role, you will:
- Lead end-to-end period close activities, ensuring accurate postings, timely close, and completion of analytical reviews in line with relevant GAAPs and HSBC standards.
- Apply and review accounting treatments and disclosures for IFRS 7, IFRS 9, IFRS 15, IFRS 16 and IAS 37, escalating complex judgements and ensuring statutory/regulatory compliance.
- Oversee balance sheet reconciliation and substantiation processes, ensuring clear ownership, ageing control, evidence standards, and resolution of breaks within agreed timelines.
- Build and maintain strong understanding of upstream source systems, interfaces, and transformation logic into final reporting; troubleshoot data issues and partner with IT/Change teams to fix root causes.
- Support/lead GL implementation initiatives, including requirement validation, test strategy awareness (SIT/UAT/regression), test case review, defect management, and sign-offs for production readiness.
- Implement proactive controls to detect issues early, ensure control evidence is complete, manage operational risk, and maintain contingency preparedness (including 100% backup coverage for critical activities).
- Identify and execute opportunities to reduce month-end workload, improve quality/turnaround, and automate manual steps using tools such as Excel/MS Access (and partnering for broader automation where needed).
- Act as a “business developer” for stakeholders: run/attend governance calls, drive issue resolution, respond to senior management queries, ensure PLAs/KPIs are met error-free, and coach the team via training needs analysis and development plans.
To be successful you will:
- CA/MBA/ICWA with 10+ years post-qualification experience; strong grasp of accounting principles and their application.
- Prior experience in a banking organisation is an advantage.
- Hands-on experience managing general ledger activities, closing cycles, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Ability to apply structure, analysis, and solution-thinking to resolve complex/problematic areas.
- Builds effective working relationships with business partners/customers across levels.
- Leads and motivates multiple teams/processes; approachable management style with strong team-handling capability.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to negotiate and manage conflicts constructively.
- Very good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, strong Excel skills for large datasets; flexible for stretched hours/time zones at month-end.
