HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realize their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Investment Engineer

Purpose of the role

The Global Investment Technology team is looking for an Investment Engineer to accelerate the evolution of the investment platform by building and enhancing front-office portfolio analytics and Investment Decision Support Tools. This includes delivering scalable, real-time and future-ready capabilities across portfolio optimisation, risk management, predictive tools and artificial intelligence and machine learning driven asset management, strengthening automation, agility and innovation across global teams.

The role will work across all major asset classes, including environmental, social and governance and Responsible Investment, and will apply strong quantitative engineering to develop robust analytics and modelling capabilities.

The role-holder will be expected to combine strong people leadership with the ability to design, build and deliver solutions personally within C sharp and Python environments, while setting engineering standards and advancing quantitative modelling to support investment strategies and decision-making.

This role will play a key part in supporting the Senior Financial Engineering and Rapid Development Lead by translating strategic priorities into delivered capabilities, uplifting engineering standards, and ensuring high-quality execution across data pipelines, model implementation, and analytics tooling to meet front office needs at pace.
In this role, you will be:

  • Contribute hands-on to quantitative engineering by building and enhancing components for portfolio analytics (for example: risk metrics, optimisation inputs, predictive signals) in C sharp and Python, under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Support delivery of Investment Decision Support Tools enhancements by implementing well-defined changes, assisting with integration, and helping improve performance and reliability.
  • Assist with data wrangling, cleaning, preparation and validation to ensure high-quality datasets for downstream models and reporting (including environmental, social and governance and Responsible Investment datasets where applicable).
  • Apply agreed artificial intelligence and machine learning and model risk controls (for example: basic monitoring, documentation, reproducibility checks) to support safe and effective use of analytics.
  • Collaborate with adjacent teams (platform support and delivery, analytics oversight, investment governance reporting) to deliver features and resolve issues efficiently, supporting the Senior Financial Engineering and Rapid Development Lead.
  • Collaborate globally within the Investment Technology team.
  • Lead a sub-team of financial engineering and rapid development.

To be successful you will be:

  • C sharp engineering (design, performance, testing), Python engineering (data and machine learning, production patterns).
  • Knowledge of statistics and experience with numerical analysis (for example: regression, optimisation) and machine learning.
  • Practice in data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Qlik or similar (good to have).
  • A qualified Chartered Financial Analyst, Financial Risk Manager, or equivalent would be an advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to develop relationships across the various stakeholders. Capable of prioritising and multi-tasking in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines under pressure, while maintaining close attention to detail. Excellent organisational and time management skills with a positive and proactive “can do” attitude.
