The Opportunity

Join our FX Options technology team in Toronto as a hands-on Senior Java Technical Lead supporting the FX Options Primary Trading System. The FX Option Risk Monitoring System is a key component of Primary Trading, and the team’s remit may expand over time to include the Pricing and Distribution platform and related services.

This role is primarily focused on delivery. You’ll be expected to design, build, test, release, and support production-quality software, including making code changes yourself. You’ll take technical ownership of enhancements and defect fixes across the full delivery lifecycle, working closely with Product, Front Office traders, quant teams, and global engineering colleagues.

The role also includes an opportunity to help establish and grow a small Toronto-based engineering capability, potentially comprising three or four developers. However, team growth is a secondary responsibility, not the primary purpose of the role. Depending on approved headcount and business priorities, the team may remain very small or consist of only the successful candidate. The role therefore requires someone who can deliver independently and effectively without relying on a large local team.

You’ll collaborate closely with a China-based technical lead and engineering team within a global delivery model. Success means delivering reliable production outcomes, strengthening platform resilience and observability, and contributing to a high-quality engineering capability in North America.

Key responsibilities

Hands-on technical delivery

• Design, develop, test, release, and support Java services across the FX Options Primary Trading System, including its Risk Monitoring component.
• Implement enhancements and defect fixes directly, taking ownership from analysis through to post-release validation.
• Work with Product, Front Office traders, quant teams, and technology stakeholders to clarify requirements and make pragmatic technical decisions.
• Manage cross-system impacts across trading, risk, pricing, distribution, and shared data flows as the team’s remit expands.
• Improve resilience, performance, security and observability through effective logging, metrics, alerting, and operational practices.
• Lead incident triage, root-cause analysis, and permanent corrective actions, while strengthening automated testing and CI/CD quality.

Team growth and technical leadership

• Help establish and grow a small Toronto engineering capability through mentoring, onboarding, knowledge sharing, and technical guidance.
• Set practical standards for code quality, testing, documentation, design reviews, code reviews, and production support.
• Balance individual delivery with team development, prioritizing business outcomes and production reliability over organizational growth.
• Coordinate work, dependencies and technical decisions with the China-based technical lead and global engineering teams.
• Build clear communication, handover and shared-ownership practices across locations and time zones.

What we’re looking for

Technical experience

• Strong senior-level experience building and supporting Java backend systems in production, with a proven ability to make code changes independently.
• Strong experience with modern Java, Spring, Spring Boot, REST APIs and microservices patterns.
• Solid engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, concurrency, performance tuning, clean code, and maintainable architecture.
• Experience delivering resilient, secure, and observable services, supported by automated testing, CI/CD, and effective production operations.
• Experience with incident triage, root-cause analysis, and permanent remediation in a production environment.
• Experience in financial services, trading, risk, pricing, market data, distribution, or another high-volume, time-sensitive domain would be advantageous.

Technical leadership and team development

• Demonstrable experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, or coaching to software engineers.
• Ability to lead through technical contribution and delivery, rather than relying on formal people-management responsibility.
• Experience establishing pragmatic engineering standards and improving team capability.
• Ability to balance hands-on development with mentoring and coordination responsibilities.
• Strong judgement when prioritizing delivery, operational risk, technical debt and team capacity.
• A collaborative leadership style that values different perspectives and supports shared accountability.

Global delivery experience

• Experience working effectively with globally distributed or cross-border engineering teams.
• Ability to coordinate delivery, technical decisions, dependencies, and handovers across time zones.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration.
• Ability to build trusted relationships with colleagues from different locations, cultures, and professional backgrounds.
• Experience working within shared ownership models for delivery and production support.

Stakeholder management

• Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including Front Office, Product, quant, and platform partners.
• Confidence in clarifying requirements, challenging assumptions and explaining technical trade-offs.
• Strong ownership mindset, with the judgement to identify risks early and drive issues through to resolution.

Building a dependable and scalable FX Options platform

This role is designed for a senior engineer who wants to remain close to the code while taking broader technical ownership. You’ll directly deliver enhancements and fixes for the FX Options Primary Trading System, including the Risk Monitoring component, with potential future contribution to Pricing and Distribution.

You’ll work closely with Front Office and quant stakeholders, collaborate with the China-based technical lead and engineering team, and help develop a small Toronto engineering capability where funding and business priorities allow.

The successful candidate won’t be a people manager in disguise. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: delivery comes first, with team growth, mentoring and capability building forming an important but secondary part of the job.
