Product Control within Controllership provides independent control and assurance, product expertise, commercial insight and guidance to businesses involved in trading activities throughout HSBC. Core Product Control is responsible for accurate reporting of Front Office based P&L and ensuring assets and liabilities are recorded under the appropriate accounting treatment (e.g. amortised cost or fair value), alongside analysis and insight into P&L drivers and robust balance sheet control and substantiation for the Markets business.
We are seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Manager – Product Control, based in Sydney. This role is co-located with the sales and treasury desk, working closely with stakeholders to deliver a transparent view of P&L and balance sheet performance, with a strong focus on controls, governance and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight and escalation for Core Product Control activities across Australia and Manila, ensuring processes and controls are accurately followed for the Global Macro and Markets Treasury balance sheet and P&L
- Ensure daily P&L production, risk and roll-based P&L explain, P&L commentary, and month-end balance sheet reporting (including substantiation, analysis and commentary) adhere to minimum standards in the Product Control Framework
- Partner with regional Product Control colleagues to drive consistency of processes, control outputs and oversight activities
- Understand how Core Product Control activities sit within the HSBC Risk Management Framework; identify, manage and escalate emerging risks and issues to Front Office/Product Control management
- Support audit and regulatory requests by ensuring controls, evidence and governance are robust and readily available
- Drive continuous improvement across Product Control (Core PC and Valuations), increasing efficiency and strengthening controls through procedures and systems change
- Use technology and data to enable automation and control enhancements (e.g. Python, SQL, Alteryx, Productivity Suite, AI/ML)
- Collaborate with Core PC, PC Valuations, Financial Control, Accounting Control & Reconciliation and CFO teams to deliver a transparent view of P&L and balance sheet, and present the business view to traders and trading management
- Challenge and support stakeholders on new business and change initiatives, and support rollout and adoption of global Product Control tools across Product Control and Front Office
- Complete mandatory training and proactively lead your own development, using resources such as the AI Academy and relevant Degreed learning pathways
Requirements:
- Experience in a Product Control function (or similar) with a strong control focus and understanding of the Product Control workflow
- Strong knowledge of financial markets products, associated risks, data flows, trade lifecycle, accounting principles and valuation techniques/models, with a focus on Foreign Exchange and Interest Rate products
- Excellent analytical capability and a proactive, structured approach to problem solving, with proven ability to analyse daily P&L, P&L trends and balance sheet movements
- Sound understanding of primary financial statements (Balance Sheet and Income Statement) and disclosures/notes, including fair value disclosure, derivative assets/liabilities, and trading assets/liabilities
- Demonstrated ability to drive change and deliver automation using tools such as Alteryx, Python, AI/ML and data-driven approaches
- Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a team, in environments with high autonomy and accountability
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with colleagues across different locations and backgrounds, including experience with nearshore/offshore teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Professional qualifications (e.g. CFA, ACA, CPA, FRM) are advantageous
