The Chief Technology Office (CTO) manages IT services and infrastructure critical for HSBC employees and customers, such as compute platforms, storage, database, data centres, voice, video and data networks, infrastructure security, cloud hosted infrastructure, contact centre and end user services such as collaboration and workspace technologies.



Within CTO is the Sustainability function, which serves as HSBC Technology’s central team that manage the creation and monitoring of environmental standards for technology related programmes and initiatives. This includes the production and management of energy and carbon metrics, data and insights that other areas within CTO and technology can consume to drive sustainable and commercial outcomes.

In this role, you will:

 

  • Be a primary lead on setting environmental standards and methodologies for Technology asset classes, and associated programmes and initiatives 
  • Develop baseline capability assessments across technology domains to inform sustainability improvement roadmaps.
  • Lead cross-functional working groups to embed sustainability into architecture, engineering, procurement, and operational practices.
  • Should be able to articulate the product vision of what is to be built and convey that vision to the Agile software development team.
  • Develop sustainability standards and guide the Tech Net Zero Practice in setting out standards, best practices with appropriate tooling.
  • Support creation of assurance-ready data sets for regulatory reporting and internal audit purposes.
  • Collaborate with teams to integrate environmental standards into technology supplier selection, evaluation, and ongoing due diligence

 

 

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

 

  • Deep understanding of digital emissions accounting (e.g. cloud scope 2/3 estimations, embodied emissions of hardware, software energy profiling).
  • Experience with sustainability data integration into enterprise platforms (e.g. ITAM, FinOps, ServiceNow, CMDB, DCI
  • Familiarity with ISO 30134 data centre metrics, ITAM standards, and ITAD provider evaluation.
  • Experience with Digital Sustainability activity-based engagement
  • Strong stakeholder management capabilities across business areas at all levels including Group level executives.
  • Leadership experience working in matrix, international teams.
  • Experience driving or contributing to GreenOps, Sustainable IT, or Digital Carbon Footprinting initiatives.
  • Ability to influence architecture and programme design decisions through a sustainability lens

 

This role is based in Sheffield, Birmingham, Barnsley, Wakefield Or Edinburgh.
