Job description

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We’re currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Senior Full Stack Engineer.

In the role as Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will focus on hands-on engineering across backend microservices, UI applications and databases to deliver a first-in-class solution iteratively into the hands of users. You’ll help shape the architecture and design aligned to a Java 21+ microservice structure while raising standards for quality and operational readiness.

Working with a global team, you’ll partner with business and engineering leadership to clarify requirements and translate them into deliverable outcomes. Success means reliable, frequent production change and services that run smoothly in Docker containers on Kubernetes within GCP. You’ll also strengthen engineering practices across testing, code review, documentation and continuous improvement.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you will:

  • Build and release backend microservices, UI applications and database changes into production for CDD
  • Shape architecture and design aligned to a Java 21+ microservice structure
  • Accelerate delivery cadence across the team through hands-on contribution and reliable production change
  • Set engineering standards, mentor engineers and embed modern software development practices
  • Partner with business and engineering leadership to understand requirements and align delivery across the wider team
  • Strengthen engineering culture across testing, code review, operational readiness, documentation and continuous improvement
  • Remove impediments, surface risks and communicate issues to programme management
  • Support delivery and operational excellence for services running in Docker containers on Kubernetes within GCP

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Bring extensive hands-on software engineering experience designing, developing and deploying backend applications to production
  • Demonstrate proven experience shaping engineering practice and supporting engineering and cultural change across teams
  • Show strong experience designing microservices and broader microservice architecture
  • Evidence delivery experience releasing change to production at high cadence with reliability
  • Apply strong CI/CD practice across build, test and deployment workflows
  • Build and deliver RESTful APIs to production
  • Design schemas and work extensively with PostgreSQL databases
  • Develop UI applications using ReactJS and support end-to-end delivery across the stack
  • Work confidently with Docker, Kubernetes and GCP in production environments
  • Build backend services in Java (Java 21+ preferred)
