IBM MQ is our strategic messaging platform supporting the fast-growing demand from numerous customers. We support hundreds of queue managers across tens of mainframe systems processing billions of messages every day.  As a specialist engineer, you will develop engineering solutions to help manage the MQ for z/OS estate, work with a federated global support team and help develop the infrastructure and products we support.

 

What you’ll do

 

•             Deliver Messaging infrastructure for the business, principally through the support and ongoing management & maintenance of the mainframe IBM MQ estate, ensuring operational quality and efficiency.

•             Develop, maintain and operate automated solutions to improve accuracy, reliability and speed of delivery across our global estate.

•             Ensure infrastructure and services are built and configured in compliance with centrally defined blueprints, design patterns and standards, reusing approved components as far as possible.

•             Simultaneously support a number of additional internally and externally-driven projects, ensuring an appropriate level of messaging (MQ) support is provided to help resolve any infrastructure issues during the various lifecycle phases.

•             Develop an understanding of business requirements and technical specifications to prioritise an often-competing list of projects, requirements and tasks.

•             Own the resolution of problems, demonstrating analytical and problem management skills to drive the resolution and prevent future recurrence.

•             Apply monitoring & tuning methodologies to identify and investigate potential performance or configuration issues both proactively and in response to incidents and problems

•             Produce and maintain documentation to allow other engineers and our customers to use the solutions we deliver.

•             Provide change, incident and problem support as necessary, by participating in group chats, crisis calls and out of hours support as needed.

 

What you need to have to succeed in this role

 

•             Significant in-depth experience of managing software on a zSeries environment, particularly IBM MQ for z/OS.

•             Experience with SMP/E software management, Unix system services, mainframe high availability concepts and architectures, DB2 data sharing, IBM MQ shared queues, use of both RACF and ACF2 ESMs.

•             Experience with mainframe scripting & coding languages (eg JCL, REXX, COBOL)

•             Experience with IBM MQ clustering, messaging architectures, high availability and DR/contingency solutions

•             Experience with IBM MQ on other operating systems, for example Linux, Windows, iSeries would be an advantage

•             Awareness of other messaging tools and technologies such as IBM Tivoli Monitoring, MQ IPT would be an advantage

•             Experience using Ansible, Jenkins, Github, Jira and similar CICD tooling would be an advantage

•             Experience of managing or leading large programmes of work whilst delivering enterprise strength solutions to manage & operate a globally disperse infrastructure.

•             Experience providing production support, troubleshooting issues and engaging with vendors for solutions.

•             Strong strategic planning and execution skills, being able to identify and adopt strategic and pragmatic approaches to deliver solutions
