Job description

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

This role sits in the Engineer Foundation Platform team where we’re building and running cloud services on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for HSBC Wealth and Personal Banking. You’ll help shape and evolve a large, globally distributed Kubernetes platform that hosts APIs, applications and event-driven services and enables thousands of developers to deliver business applications.

Working across DevOps pods you’ll set direction on engineering standards, automation and operational excellence in a highly regulated environment. Success means a platform that stays highly available, meets governance and architecture expectations and keeps pace with growing business demand. You’ll work closely with stakeholders across Cloud Services, application teams and global IT to deliver outcomes that are secure, scalable and supportable.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you’ll:

  • Oversee engineering initiatives across a global team within DevOps pods
  • Partner with stakeholders to meet governance, project delivery and architecture requirements
  • Shape the Kubernetes platform roadmap to support growing business demand
  • Build and manage AWS cloud environments that enable application deployments
  • Engineer solutions using Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Ensure operational and compliance activities are completed and remediation plans are owned through to closure
  • Provide quality assurance across delivery and embed best practice through development and operations
  • Strengthen automation, continuous improvement and engineering standards across the platform
  • Maintain high availability across the platform and its core services

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Bring deep experience building and operating cloud platforms at scale including migration considerations and how to address them
  • Demonstrate advanced Kubernetes expertise and strong AWS knowledge
  • Show hands-on experience running large-scale platforms across build, test, deploy, monitoring and alerting
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code approaches with tools such as Terraform or equivalent
  • Use container and platform tooling such as Docker, Helm and service meshes such as Istio or equivalent
  • Build and support CI/CD pipelines and platform automation using modern tooling
  • Operate effectively in a highly regulated environment with a clear focus on security standards and approved design patterns
  • Work confidently in Agile Scrum and DevOps environments using tools such as Jira and Confluence
  • Communicate complex technical topics clearly to varied audiences and build strong working relationships across teams
