Job description

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are seeking an AI Technical Lead

Joining HSBC’s Chief AI Office puts you at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in one of the world’s leading financial institutions. Responsible AI at HSBC is actionable, risk-based and outcome-oriented. The Group’s AI Governance process and supporting tooling are being transformed to make governance more intelligent, automated and data driven.

In this role, you will lead the technical design and delivery of intelligent solutions to enhance AI lifecycle management and governance across the Group. Combining hands-on AI engineering and solution design, you will translate lifecycle and governance requirements into scalable, production-ready solutions using LLMs, AI agents and knowledge graphs.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the technical design and delivery of AI governance capabilities, translating product priorities and governance requirements into scalable solutions.
  • Build and deploy AI-powered applications, using LLMs, AI agents, retrieval techniques, workflow orchestration, APIs and enterprise services.
  • Develop the AI governance knowledge graph and semantic model, connecting governance concepts, data, policies, controls, relationships and workflow context.
  • Integrate AI solutions with HSBC’s technology ecosystem, including the Group AI Platform, enterprise services, strategic data products and reporting layers.
  • Ensure production quality and responsible operation, covering testing, security, privacy, reliability, performance, cost, human oversight, traceability and auditability.

To be successful in this role you should have the following skills:

  • Strong hands-on AI engineering experience, including production use of LLMs, AI agents, retrieval-augmented techniques and orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph or equivalent.
  • Strong software engineering capability, particularly Python, API development, automated testing, version control, CI/CD and production observability.
  • Proven technical leadership in complex enterprise environments, including technical design reviews, code reviews, engineering guidance and management of dependencies.
  • Strong solution architecture and systems-integration skills, including APIs, workflow automation, modular services and enterprise architecture.
  • Practical Responsible AI and governance experience, including quality, security, privacy, reliability, explainability, human oversight, traceability and auditability.

We are committed to removing barriers and ensuring careers at HSBC are inclusive and accessible for everyone to be at their best. We take pride in being a Disability Confident Leader and will offer an interview to people with disabilities, long term conditions or neurodivergent candidates who meet the minimum criteria for the role.
