We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team.

We are seeking a highly motivated, open-minded, and results-driven Senior Credit Approval to join our wholesale credit approval team in HSBC China. Reporting to regional approval team head, this role is a key contributor to the China local customer credit approval process, supporting the delivery of the China Strategic Delivery Plan and ensuring alignment with HSBC’s risk appetite and credit standards.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting credit assessments across a range of corporate credit facilities, including domestic and cross-border lending, project finance, leveraged finance, capital markets, and treasury products. The role also plays a vital part in portfolio monitoring, early warning identification, the management of high-risk accounts, and the delivery of key credit-related projects.

 

In this role, you will:

Key Responsibilities

  • Credit Approval & Risk Assessment: Conduct in-depth credit assessments and approvals for corporate clients, ensuring alignment with HSBC’s risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
  • Portfolio Management: Support portfolio monitoring, identify early warning signals, and contribute to the management of high-risk accounts.
  • Sector/Product Coverage: Act as a sector lead for an assigned industry(note: does not necessarily mean the role covers portfolio primarily in this sector), providing strategic insight and driving sector-specific credit initiatives for the sectoral portfolio across HBCN. Contribute to the development of sector/product papers and risk frameworks, supporting business growth and risk alignment.
  • Project Ownership & Process Improvement: Lead and drive credit-related projects, including process streamlining and automation by utilization AI and other relevant new technologies or tools. Engage with front-line teams to perform portfolio reviews, conduct process reshaping, and identify opportunities for efficiency and control improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Global Businesses, Second Line of Defense Functions, and key stakeholders to ensure consistent application of credit policies and decisioning standards. Partner with business and regional/group risk teams to translate market dynamics, client needs and cross-border business development into practical credit insights, while aligning local practices with global standards and strategic credit priorities.
  • Compliance & Control: Ensure adherence to internal controls, regulatory requirements, and HSBC’s risk governance framework.
  • Mentorship & Development: Support the development of junior credit professionals through coaching and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Personal Attributes: Highly motivated, open-minded, and results-oriented. Demonstrates strong execution capability, curiosity, and a continuous learning mindset. Able to iterate and improve based on experience and feedback.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Exceptional experience or proven track record may allow for flexibility in educational requirements.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in credit risk management, preferably in a wholesale banking environment. Exceptional capability or proven track record may allow for flexibility in this requirement.
  • Sector Expertise: Demonstrated ability to lead and provide strategic insight in a specific sector.
  • Project Management: Proven track record in leading credit-related projects, including automation, process improvement, and system implementation.
  • Analytical & Commercial Acumen: Strong financial and credit analysis skills with the ability to assess risk and reward in a commercial context.
  • Communication & Influence: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
  • Technology & Innovation: Familiar with AI and other innovative technologies. Demonstrates exploration and implementation capabilities in applying new methodologies and tools to enhance credit processes and decision-making.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of local and international credit related requirements.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English and Mandarin.
