Head of Business Risk and Control Services

Roles and Responsibilities

This is a key leadership role under the IWPB Head of mainland China, with responsibility for leading the strategic priorities in the first line business risk and controls service to support the delivery of business goals in IWPB China.

Business Risk and Control Services

1. Strengthen the end-to-end business control environment, ensuring key risks are identified, assessed, monitored, and mitigated. Work within the governance framework and support the business lines to provide clear sight of emerging risks and incident trends across their functions.
2. Maintain deep connection with the lines of business, understand the challenges across the IWPB  functions and lead improvements to ensure progression to a more standard, sustainable and optimized business operation.
3. Proactively engage with the 2nd  Line of Defense (2LOD) and 3LOD teams, where appropriate, act as the key interface of 1LOD supporting Head of IWPB China in setting strategy and direction for a strong business risk management.
4. Strengthen controls and ability to achieve cost efficiencies in line with market, client demand and service expectations.
5. Efficient and resilient operations of the decision infrastructure and ongoing engagement with Risk and Products on strategy changes that improve customer outcomes.  Oversee the production of risk and control management reports and articulate the findings and recommendations.
6. Oversee, support and deliver fit for purpose risk governance arrangements and related internal / external reporting.
7. Support as required any related risk and control related activities including, but not restricted to, liaison with Internal/External Audit and Regulatory Authorities as well as key internal stakeholder.
8. Manage non-financial risk relating including financial crime risk, conduct risk, sales suitability and quality, operational risk, etc.   Provide a 1st Line of Defence risk advice, challenge and operational support to the business over the management of IPWB risk and control environment.
9. Support the Wealth growth (Deposit, FX, Investment, Insurance, etc.) across customer segments by ensuring clear control guidance and procedure, prudent risk appetite, advanced management tools, effective detection and monitoring.
10. Ensure sustainable lending (Credit Cards, Personal Loans, Mortgages, etc.) through effective credit underwriting and default management, end to end customer journey optimization and  proactive Credit Bureau (and alternate data providers) management;
11. Protect customers from fraud and managing the gross and net fraud loss trade off with customer friction in payments and lending 
12. Promote a positive risk culture in the organization. Fully embed the control framework and develop stakeholder engagement. Drive the conduct and culture agenda to raise the risk awareness and control expertise.

Qualification

1. Multiple years of experience as senior leader of business and people management
2. Proven record in a senior leadership role in business risk management, operational risk, controls and governance with in-depth understanding and experience in the financial and banking sector.
3. Risk & Control subject matter expertise. Comprehensive knowledge of the external environment (risk, regulatory, political, competitors etc.). Ability to translate policy/regulatory expectations into practical business controls.
4. A strategic thinker with strong execution capabilities and prudent risk mindset.  Possesses high sensitivity to the changing market dynamics. Demonstrate a good understanding of key trends and areas of innovation.
5. A seasoned executive with excellent communication and influencing capability, and the ability to drive a diverse group including internal and external partners.
6. Ability to work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, fostering collaboration and alignment across different areas of the organization 
7. Proven track record in driving robust business performance, leading and managing change, particularly in sizeable and dynamic organization environment。
8. Ability to identify, assess and communicate the need for risk management intervention in complex, fast paced environments. 
9. Ability to distil complex and varied information into useful, insightful and concise recommendations. 
10. Business acumen with advanced strategic planning and project management skills and a hands-on approach to drive improvement and resolve problems. Proven experience delivering complex programs and initiatives simultaneously, including exposure to change management, process improvement techniques and business case development.
11. Sound understanding of the HSBC business strategy, risk management framework, products/solution offered and the competitive market or well positioned based on equivalent experience with other firms to learn quickly.
