We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Principal Engineer, SME. 

The Opportunity:

Group Functions Technology is responsible for the design, build and ongoing maintenance of the systems owned by the Group Functions (Risk, Compliance, Finance, Core Banking, Corporate Functions and Deputy COO). The organization consists of over 5,000 people working in collaboration across 14 countries, to support over 3,000 applications. 

We are seeking strong engineers who are accustomed to high-level direction and come up with thoughtful solutions based on industry standards with modern software development lifecycles in mind.  This role is expected to develop and articulate technical solutions effectively and influence stakeholders in the delivery of IT solutions aligned to HSBC Technology’s standards.  In this position, you will play a pivotal role in technical component delivery and best in class engineering across Engineering Excellence’s workstreams including Gen AI.

What you will do:

• Drive Engineering Excellence across many platforms and their related large-scale programs.
• Actively write and deliver code, contributing directly as a Principal Engineer.
• Demonstrate a passion for delivering quality software efficiently and reducing toil. In addition, you will drive high standards across the department and be a role model exemplifying these standards.
• Develop and communicate technical strategy and influence stakeholders in the delivery of IT solutions aligned to HSBC Technology’s strategic vision. This position plays an instrumental role in driving technical delivery and best in class engineering across a portfolio of agile teams.
• As the most senior engineer in the area, you will convey complex topics and work closely with the CIOs, business partners as well as your Principal Engineer peers. In addition, you will upskill teams and providing the oversight and direction to deliver at scale.
• Adapt to industry advancements by integrating new technologies, processes, and methodologies, critically assessing their effectiveness, and promoting their adoption throughout the organisation.
• Exhibit expertise in multiple technologies and techniques, understanding both the rationale and the methodology.
• Develop optimal architecture for the bank, leveraging knowledge of diverse approaches and their trade-offs, while considering legacy systems.
• Develop solutions that enhance the bank's efficiency, speed, and security.
• Utilize and contribute to the evolution of enterprise-wide frameworks and platforms.
• Ensures system stability, resilience, and performance in production, understanding business outcomes, dependencies, and iteratively addressing weaknesses.
• Guide technology direction by conveying ideas and plans to business stakeholders and senior management.
• Actively enhance engineering skills through mentoring, pairing, peer reviews, training sessions, and writing blogs.
• Contribute as an impactful and visible role model in the wider engineering community

What you will need to succeed in the role:

• Extensive experience delivering enterprise software in a senior engineering position
• Strong expertise in Java, Python, C++, or similar programming languages, with experience in open source / inner source projects development.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS, Ali Cloud) and associated services for scalable and secure software development.
• Experience in web, APIs, microservices, AI and GenAI development
• Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• In-depth knowledge of agile software development principles, practices, and tools (e.g., Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc.).
• Ability to follow the industry shifts and offerings across the full stack including Containers, Kubernetes, Cloud, Virtualization, service mesh, data lakes, storage and networking in Cloud environments.
• Mentor and share knowledge with others on the team, and outside teams where required.
• Understanding about various Commodity products and SaaS/PaaS Platforms in emerging technology landscape
• Maintain a strong knowledge of IT development methodology, architecture design, engineering solutions, and technical standards.
• Build inter-personal relationships with key stakeholders and technology partners.
