Job description

Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering Specialist

In this role, you will:

Quality leadership & strategy

  • Own the Quality Engineering strategy for your area, aligned to product outcomes, delivery plans, and risk appetite.
  • Define and evolve testing practices, principles, and standards (e.g., test triangle, shift-left, risk-based testing, quality gates).
  • Establish measurable quality objectives and drive continuous improvement (defect leakage, cycle time, automation ROI, stability).

Automation architecture & engineering

  • Act as Automation Architect: design scalable, maintainable automation frameworks and patterns across UI/API/Data/DB/integration/API contract/component layers (as relevant).
  • Set engineering standards for test code: clean code, design patterns, code reviews, branching strategy, and reusable libraries.
  • Build and optimize CI/CD-integrated automation pipelines (smoke/regression suites, parallel execution, environment readiness checks), support continuous testing through CI/CD.
  • Reduce flakiness and improve signal quality through robust synchronization, test data management, and observability.

Test approach & delivery excellence

  • Define test strategies for epics/features, including functional, integration, end-to-end, regression, and exploratory testing.
  • Lead quality risk assessments and ensure appropriate coverage for critical journeys, controls, and operational resilience.
  • Support non-functional testing approaches (performance, resilience, accessibility, and security testing alignment).

Generative AI & agentic AI exposure (quality enablement)

  • Bring practical exposure to Generative AI and agentic AI concepts to enhance QE outcomes (e.g., accelerating test design, improving coverage analysis, and automating repetitive QE tasks).
  • Evaluate and pilot AI-assisted testing capabilities responsibly, such as:
  • AI-assisted test case generation from requirements/user stories (with human review and traceability).
  • AI-supported automation development (e.g., code suggestions, refactoring, test data generation).
  • Intelligent test selection and prioritization using change impact signals and historical results.
  • Agentic workflows for triage support (e.g., clustering failures, suggesting likely root causes, proposing reruns) with clear guardrails.

Practice enrichment & continuous improvement

  • Introduce and embed modern testing techniques: contract testing, component testing, service virtualization, synthetic monitoring, and resilience testing (where appropriate).
  • Drive root-cause analysis for quality issues and implement preventative actions (not just fixes).
  • Define quality metrics and dashboards; communicate quality health, risks, and release readiness with evidence.
  • To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:
