Job description

Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of a Sr. Associate Director, Software Engineering

In this role, you will:

  • Set AI-enabled engineering direction (platform + product): Define and champion practical AI-enabled patterns (including agent-based tooling) that improve SDLC and outcomes across teams.
  • Hands-on delivery and reference implementations: Build reusable components, templates, accelerators, and “golden path” examples that squads can adopt with minimal friction.
  • Embed AI into products responsibly: Partner with product engineering to integrate AI into production with appropriate controls, explainability (where relevant), and operational readiness.
  • Developer experience uplift: Reduce engineering friction via developer tooling, CI/CD optimisation, test automation, observability standards, and self-service enablement.
  • Evaluate, pilot, scale: Standardise assessment of AI PoCs; run pilots with clear measures (quality, productivity, reliability, risk) and industrialise what works.
  • Architecture and technical governance: Lead design reviews and influence architecture decisions; guide trade-offs across resilience, performance, maintainability, security, cost, and pace.
  • Controls by design (secure-by-default): Embed IT controls and control automation into delivery patterns and pipelines to keep engineering audit-ready.
  • Product Control / Valuation domain delivery: Drive AI-enabled improvements across valuation control workflows (e.g., IPV, price testing, breaks/exceptions) with measurable outcomes.
  • Audit-ready-by-design controls (Valuation): Embed evidence capture, lineage, approval trails, and repeatable control checks for audit/regulatory scrutiny.
  • Data quality and reconciliation (Valuation inputs): Implement patterns to validate key inputs, detect anomalies, and automate reconciliations to reduce manual effort.

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Senior technical leadership (IC) Proven experience influencing engineering outcomes across multiple teams without relying online management authority.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals  Solid grounding in software design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and system architecture.
  • AI-enabled software engineering at scale Experience applying AI (incl. agent-based/AI tooling) to transform how teams build, test, release, and operate software.
  • Production AI delivery with measurable impact Track record embedding AI into products and/or engineering workflows, demonstrating tangible outcomes.
  • Repeatable evaluation and rollout approach Strong capability to assess AI solutions end-to-end (PoC → pilot → production) with measurement frameworks and operational readiness.
  • Cloud-native architecture & delivery Deep hands-on expertise with cloud platforms (e.g., GCP/AWS) and designing scalable, modular architectures/patterns reusable across teams.Controls and governance by design Experience automating IT control compliance in products and CI/CD pipelines; comfortable operating in audit-ready environments.
  • Stakeholder communication & collaboration Excellent written/verbal communication and strong cross-functional partnering with engineering, product, architecture, ops, Risk/InfoSec/compliance.
  • Preferred Product Control / Finance domain experience (Valuation Control), including hands-on knowledge of IPV, price testing, and breaks/exceptions processes, with a track record of designing audit-ready controls and improving valuation input data quality and reconciliations through automation/analytics.

You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
