The VP State and Local Tax Reporting and Audits reports to the Senior Manager, Corporate Tax. This individual will be responsible for all aspects of Tax Accounting, Reporting and Compliance related to State and Local Income taxes, including the preparation of quarterly and annual SEC income tax disclosures and assist with IFRS reporting at the Consolidated HSBC level.  This individual will also be responsible for managing Federal, State, and Local Tax Audits for the US HSBC Group.

 

This role will also work closely with the Tax Technology Manager to manage the monthly OneSource Tax Provision process and work with Tax team members to maintain proper documentation and ensure compliance with internal and SOX controls for Tax Accounting and compliance.

 

As our VP State and Local Tax Reporting and Audits, you will:

 

  • Prepare/review supporting materials for the monthly, quarterly and annual tax provision including consideration of changes in state or local tax law, projecting DTA positions (state NOL and other components) and tax footnote disclosures
  • Manage the collection, review and submission of external financial auditor tax information requests for both quarterly and annual reporting purposes related to State and Local taxes
  • Engagement in co-sourced compliance process, including providing supplemental details such as financial results and apportionment information needed to prepare and file state and local tax filings.  Review returns prepared by co-source partner prior to filing
  • Manage engagement and assist Senior Manager with looking for opportunities to add efficiencies to the state and local tax process
  • Partner with Tax team members and external financial auditors to track and ensure adequate documentation for internal and external SOX reporting purposes
  • Monitor emerging issues in U.S. GAAP accounting standards and SEC reporting, as well as proposed changes in state and local tax laws, and quantify the financial statement impact
  • Manage and update State FIN 48 and FAS 5 reserves and supporting analysis
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement within the Tax provision process and forecasting process, especially with respect to utilization of technology
  • Provide support and written responses for IRS Audit queries and assist with State Audit queries.
  • Assist with Tax intercompany settlement in accordance with our Tax Sharing Agreement

 

 

 

You'll likely have the following qualifications to succeed in this role:

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline
  • Strong experience at accounting firm or financial industry tax department.
  • CPA – preferred
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP accounting principles and ASC 740, recent experience with Tax Accounting and/or SOX internal controls for Tax
  • Experience with State and Local income tax compliance, including different filing methods, apportionment
  • Experience with federal and state income tax audit management
  • Experience with OneSource Tax Provision software a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and advanced Excel skills are plus
  • Proficiency in common applications (Qlik, Alteryx, Tableau.) are plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to team effectively with different business cultures
  • Strong oral, written, presentation, organizational and project management skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
