Our purpose – Opening up a world of opportunity – explains why we exist. Here at HSBC, we use our unique expertise, capabilities, breadth, and perspectives to open up new kinds of opportunity for our more than 40 million customers. We’re bringing together the people, ideas and capital that nurture progress and growth, helping to create a better world – for our customers, our people, our investors, our communities, and the planet we all share.
Sustainability is one of the most significant growth opportunities for Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB), directly supporting our ambition to be the #1 international CIB and a top three financing-led house. Building more sustainable businesses and progressing the transition to net zero remains a critical priority for all our clients. Our latest client research tells us 95% of corporates view the transition as a growth opportunity and even more see it as important to their competitive advantage.
Strategic Focus – Three Key Drivers:
Our ambition is to work with our clients to grow sustainable finance and transition revenues by more than 2x, focusing on three strategic drivers:
- Leading bank for fast-growing transition ecosystems (clean power, electrification of transport, data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI))
- Strategic transition partner for all our clients
- Bank of choice to catalyze emerging climate tech, in close coordination with the Innovation Bank
Principal Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Execute the CIB Sustainable Finance and Transition strategic plan for the US, including the commercialization strategy, by identifying strategic priorities and targeted outcomes aligned to the three key drivers above
- Ensure the CIB US sustainability agenda is aligned to both CIB’s global strategy and the Group’s sustainability plans, with a strong focus on commercializing sustainable finance solutions and driving revenue growth
- Originate transactions with clients and establish innovative, entrepreneurial client solutions that fit into the overall CIB strategy (e.g., supply chain financing, risk recycling, distribution capabilities to drive balance sheet productivity, and increasing fee income)
- Support the Global CIB Sustainable Finance and Transition team to set longer-term targets and levers to deliver on our net zero commitments, translating these into tangible nearer-term targets and specific actions for CIB US
- Lead the commercialization strategy for sustainable finance solutions, ensuring all initiatives drive revenue growth, enhance client value, and expand market share for CIB US
- Proactively identify and manage sustainability-related Risk & Controls, including compliance with sustainability risk policy and financed emissions targets
- Capture opportunities to support existing and new-to-bank clients’ transition to sustainable business models, and provide frontline teams with the products, skills, and capabilities to do so effectively
- Develop and implement marketing campaigns to support business and client base growth in the US, with a focus on sustainable finance offerings
- Work with the Global CIB Sustainable Finance and Transition team and Product leads to evolve new products and propositions, ensuring our sustainability product set is relevant, competitive, and commercially viable for all customer segments
- Provide entrepreneurial and innovative leadership across the full Sustainability agenda within CIB US, including identifying relevant partnerships with external parties to help achieve CIB's Sustainable Finance and Transition strategy
- Partner with the global team to bring coherence and remove fragmentation in how the CIB Sustainable Finance and Transition Target Operating Model is implemented across the US
- Collaborate closely with global and Product partners and Risk to shape the level of CIB’s risk appetite for specific areas of Sustainability in the US, and to shape the direction of the strategy, policies, and products required to match our commercial ambition
- Engage across the broader CIB & HSBC organization, as well as with external stakeholders (investors, policy makers, NGOs, innovative startups, and thought-leaders) to develop and execute the broader agenda in the US
- Lead on engagement with regulators and other key external stakeholders in the US on CIB Sustainable Finance and Transition matters
- Attract and develop a strong, diverse, and inclusive team, building organizational capability and mobilizing teams behind a compelling purpose, with a culture of trust, honesty, and accountability
