The role will drive the Payments strategy for the Bank’s retail business and manage the standalone UPI payments app, expanding it beyond payments towards a “super app” proposition.

A key aspect of the role is to deliver digital growth with strong governance and controls, ensuring initiatives are executed in line with HSBC internal control standards, Group standards and compliance policies, and are responsive to the evolving regulatory landscape (including RBI requirements applicable to digital payments/channels). The role will partner closely with Technology, Cyber/Information Security, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Marketing, Business and Frontline teams to ensure effective control design, implementation, evidence readiness and timely remediation of issues.

Principal Responsibilities

Strategy, Commercialization and Delivery

  • Create and execute the Mobile Banking strategy in line with overall IWP strategy, to drive adoption, engagement, revenue and cost-to-serve outcomes.
  • Drive commercialization of features and increase overall penetration and active usage of the Mobile Banking app.
  • Lead the strategy to build and commercialize the Mobile UPI Payments app, including expanding the value proposition beyond payments.
  • Conceptualize, scope and deliver new initiatives and functionality to realize revenue generation potential on direct channels.
  • Manage and grow the channel to improve customer service and generate sales from digital interactions.
  • Define and execute the transaction revenue strategy and levers (pricing, journeys, offers, partnerships, eligibility and funnels).
  • Work in conjunction with Marketing to make direct channels the preferred channel of interaction for customers.
  • Work with VS / delivery partners to drive end-to-end digital delivery outcomes (scope, timelines, dependencies, go-live readiness).

Digital Governance, Risk & Controls (incl. RBI-aligned regulatory responsiveness)

  • Establish and run a robust governance cadence for mobile and payments initiatives (clear ownership, approvals, artefacts, reporting, and decision logs) to support auditability and control assurance.
  • Ensure initiatives and day-to-day operations are in line with HSBC internal standards and controls, including engaging relevant compliance/audit/regulatory stakeholders early and incorporating their feedback before implementation.
  • Drive the channel’s responsiveness to the ever-changing regulatory framework and technological disruptions, including ensuring requirements are translated into implementable product/process controls (with RBI requirements considered where applicable).
  • Partner with Technology and Cyber/Information Security to ensure appropriate business controls are defined and embedded across digital journeys, including (as relevant):
    • access governance and role-based access / maker-checker principles, 2FA Authentication
    • secure change and release governance,
    • monitoring, logging and alerting expectations for critical customer journeys and payments,

    • data handling and privacy-by-design expectations for digital journeys,
    • Third-party/partner control expectations for UPI/NPCI/Payment Gateway ecosystem integrations.
  • Review digital performance metrics and operational dashboards to identify potential gaps in tracking/reporting, control monitoring, exceptions and customer harm indicators; drive enhancements with Technology/Analytics teams.
  • Maintain strong issue management: identify, assess, escalate and track remediation of control issues, audit observations, MSIIs, incidents and reputational risks, ensuring timely closure with clear evidence.

Management of Risk / Observation of Internal Controls

  • Adhere to processes and controls to identify and mitigate operational and reputational risks, ensuring timely escalation of control issues.
  • Maintain HSBC internal control standards and address audit points and/or issues raised by regulators in a timely manner.
  • Ensure projects and changes are reviewed with applicable compliance/control stakeholders prior to implementation and align to relevant e-commerce/FIM and direct channel requirements.

Project / Transformation Delivery

  • Lead end-to-end transformation and delivery across digital initiatives (business case, requirements, delivery governance, testing, go-live readiness and post-launch tracking).
  • Run effective program governance (steerco cadence, RAID, dependencies, decision logs and stakeholder reporting) to deliver to scope, time and quality.

Third-Party / Ecosystem Management (NPCI, UIDAI, Gateways)

  • Own strategic relationships and governance with external ecosystem partners (e.g., NPCI, UIDAI, payment gateways/aggregators and other fintech/technology partners).
