Key Accountabilities / Impact on Business

  • The Senior Manager, Risk and Compliance (Macau) support the Market Chief Risk and Compliance Officer (CRCO) who holds primary accountability for Risk and Compliance across the market. The role’s purpose is to support the Market CRCO closely liaising with all the relevant risk stewards for the market in the driving of effective identification, assessment, management, monitoring, and mitigation of risk, while ensuring the market meets all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • The role holder provides ongoing support to Market CRCO on counsel, advice, and constructive challenges to market leadership on key business decisions within the geography, closely working with all the risk stewardships for the market. This includes supporting the development of market and line of business strategies and, where required, recommending and strengthening controls, informed by a thorough understanding of the key trends, opportunities, and threats affecting the market.
  • The role holder assists CRCO and contributes to ensuring the market delivers against its Risk and Compliance objectives. The role holder also supports the CRCO in setting the local Risk and Compliance agenda, and in leading and overseeing Risk and Compliance activities across Macau to ensure effective governance, oversight, and execution.
  • The role holder is expected to work closely with Asia Wholesales Credit Risk Management in the oversight of the Market’s wholesales credit portfolio working together with the first line of defence; with Enterprise Risk Management in embedding HSBC’s Risk Culture and executing Risk Governance and Strategy; with IWPB Risk, Operational and Resilient Risk and other financial and non-financial risk stewards to support the CRCO in driving a cohesive risk and compliance capability for the Market.
  • The jobholder supports the CRCO in operating within a complex environment where some markets are expected to grow rapidly, while others are managed for value and are therefore unlikely to receive significant investment. The role helps the business maintain an appropriate control environment and supports effective identification, assessment, management, and monitoring of risks.
  • The role assists the CRCO in influencing and supporting decision-making across multiple stakeholders, including business heads, other Risk functions, regulators, and Risk and Audit Committees. It requires strong coordination, structured analysis, and careful assessment of issues to ensure the right focus and prioritisation are applied.
  • The jobholder works with a high degree of autonomy, supporting the CRCO on significant matters where there may be no clear-cut solution. The role is expected to apply sound judgement, provide clear recommendations, and help drive timely resolution. For matters of major consequence, the jobholder supports the CRCO in preparing materials and facilitating escalation, as appropriate, to the Hong Kong Pillar Risk and Compliance Oversight, Asia Risk and Compliance, and the Market CEO.
 
Job Requirements:
  • Strong risk & compliance stewardship capability: ability to support effective identification, assessment, management, monitoring, and mitigation of risk; ensure legal/regulatory requirements are met.
  • Senior stakeholder management & constructive challenge: confident advising and challenging market leadership; influencing across business heads, risk functions, regulators, and governance forums (Risk/Audit Committees)
  • Sound judgement + structured analysis in ambiguity: operate with autonomy where there’s no clear- cut solution; prioritise issues, make recommendations, and drive timely resolution/escalation.
