HSBC’s Legal function plays a critical role in supporting the bank’s global operations, managing legal risk, and ensuring the efficient and effective use of external legal resources. We work closely with leading law firms and alternative legal service providers (ALSPs) to secure the best commercial and strategic outcomes for the bank


We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join the UK and Europe Banking CIB Legal team.  As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported and mitigated. This role will typically report to a Managing Associate General Counsel.

In this role, you will:

 

  • Lead and manage a team of credit & lending specialised lawyers to support the Global Network Banking, Global Corporates and International Mid Market Coverage teams in HBEU and HBEU branches  with flow lending transactional requirements and all connected client issues/concerns
  • Support on Global Credit and Lending initiatives / projects across CIB broadly (including flow and Investment Banking products) including regional and/or global regulatory/transformation or simplification projects. 
  • Be the accountable lawyer to the Business on legal issues that the Business faces, ensuring commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner.
  • Provide guidance and support to the Business on non-standard legal and reputational risks connected to clients in their segments. You will also be responsible for training, supervising and reviewing the work of the other members of the team and helping to create and update negotiation guidelines, playbooks and other support materials to be used by the team. 
  • Evaluate and respond to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise and apply to Credit & Lending products, processes and controls.
  • Collaborate and co-ordinate with other members of the UK and Europe Banking CIB legal team and coverage teams from other jurisdictions to ensure efficient and effective ways of working and sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the teams/businesses.

 

 

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements: 

 

  • English qualified lawyer with demonstratable relevant experience gained either within a financial institution or top tier private practice.
  • Lending specialism essential with leveraged or project finance experience desirable but not essential.
  • Experience managing a specialized team of lawyers and paraprofessionals is desirable but not essential.
  • Maintain knowledge of HSBC Group operations and policies.
  • Strong relationship management skills with higher levels of management inspiring confidence of customers/stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate multiple stakeholders with competing priorities and under time pressure.

 

 

The base location for this role is London with a hybrid working pattern.
