Global Legal plays an important role in protecting HSBC’s reputation, helping to safeguard the organisation by providing robust and comprehensive advice on legal issues and risks. Our lawyers advise senior management and the Global Businesses and Functions. They offer a range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all the countries and territories in which HSBC operates.

 

We are currently seeking an individual to join the Export Finance and Infrastructure Finance Legal team in the role of Legal Counsel. The Legal Counsel will provide high quality, timely and cost-effective legal advice, origination and structuring support and transaction execution to the HSBC Infrastructure Finance (“HIF”) business in EMEA, supporting HIF business colleagues based in London, Paris, Dusseldorf, Dubai, Riyadh as well as other regional colleagues in Hong Kong and Singapore, and any other sites from time to time.

 

You will primarily support the structuring, negotiation and execution of export finance, infrastructure finance, growth markets and project financings. In addition, you will partner with the HIF business on ongoing legal and regulatory developments across regions relevant to the business, new product governance and development initiatives and workstreams and the delivery of HIF’s key strategic objectives in green and sustainable finance.

 

Career progression is also available with greater accountability in a similar area of coverage, such as Senior Legal Counsel.

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Assist the structuring, review and negotiation of finance documentation for cross-border export credit, infrastructure finance, and project finance transactions (with involvement from pitch phase to completion, and thereafter), alongside origination teams.
  • Provide legal advice to the HIF Portfolio Management Team on legacy transactions in distressed and non-distressed scenarios. Demonstrating a good commercial understanding of the range of loan transactions and maintaining a detailed knowledge of current market terms.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of how export credit agencies and multilateral agencies operate, the various products they offer and CIRR funding structures.
  • Review internal escalation and resolution of legal, reputational and other internal issues.
  • Managing relationships with the various internal and external stakeholders (including the export credit agencies), HIF senior management, Issuer Services, other colleagues in Legal (both in London and in other teams globally), Portfolio Management, ESG, Compliance, Credit and Tax.

 

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

 

  • A UK qualified lawyer with demonstrable export, infrastructure and/or project finance experience gained within a top-tier financial institution and/or private practice is essential.
  • Knowledge and experience of banking, corporate and securities law and legal concepts and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates.
  • The ability to handle a diverse range of issues and pick up ad hoc projects as needed.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise different competing workloads in a busy transactional environment.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and strong inter-personal skills.

 

The base location for this role is London with a hybrid working pattern.
