Chief Technology Office Controls Director

Shape the future of technology risk at a truly global scale.

We are seeking an exceptional senior leader to partner directly with HSBC’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) and shape how one of the world’s largest and most complex financial institutions safeguards its technology, data, and operations. This is a role for a strategic thinker who thrives at Board level, influencing across continents, leading global teams, and delivering control excellence in an environment of rapid innovation and evolving risk.

In this high-profile, strategically critical role, you will join an influential leadership team partnering with the HSBC CTO to shape and safeguard the future of technology risk management across one of the world’s largest financial institutions.

You will drive the delivery of risk-based, outcome-focused strategies on a global scale — advising the most senior leaders on the most pressing control and risk priorities that impact the Group. This is a pivotal role in ensuring that HSBC’s technology services remain resilient, secure, and trusted by our customers, colleagues, and stakeholders worldwide.

As the leader of the GCIO Chief Control Office (GCIO CCO) — the function that directly supports the CTO — you will have the influence, remit, and resources to set the strategic direction for control excellence across all regions and global business lines.

This is not just a role in governance — it is an opportunity to shape how HSBC manages risk in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, embedding a culture of control that enables innovation while protecting the Bank’s reputation and operations.

In this role, duties will include:

  • Leading robust risk governance at a global scale, ensuring Board-level visibility of key risks and critical remediation progress
  • Acting as a trusted strategic adviser to the CTO and senior executives on risk appetite, complex control challenges, and transformational opportunities
  • Driving a culture of constructive challenge to strengthen decision-making and risk outcomes
  • Overseeing high-impact reviews of control performance, ensuring clear accountability and measurable improvement
  • Steering global control remediation programmes to successful, sustainable resolution
  • Championing organisation-wide awareness of technology risk, controls, and risk management best practices
  • Continuously evolving the control framework to address emerging threats, behaviours, and regulatory expectations
  • Embedding the Bank’s Risk Management Framework to support strategic growth and operational resilience

To be successful in this role you should have the following skills:

Technical:

  • Executive leadership in multi-disciplinary technical risk and control functions within complex, global organisations
  • Influencing at the most senior stakeholder levels to deliver material, measurable risk reduction
  • Translating global business and technology strategies into actionable, risk-aware control frameworks
  • Deep understanding of technology controls across infrastructure (including database and middleware), platforms, Cloud, IT Architecture, and the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Application of Non-Financial Risk frameworks at scale across diverse geographies and business lines
  • Ability to lead high-impact risk and control reviews, identifying opportunities for automation and innovation
  • Experience building and leading high-performing global teams of senior control experts

Behavioural Skills:

  • Exceptional business partnering skills with C-suite and Board-level stakeholders
  • Customer-focused mindset with a deep understanding of business priorities
  • Outcome-oriented leadership, ensuring tangible business value from risk and control initiatives
  • Strategic problem-solving with the ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity
  • Inspirational team leadership, developing and retaining top-tier talent

Cognitive Skills:

  • Divided attention
  • Auditory processing
  • Critical thinking
  • Collaboration
