The value you’ll add:

As Chief Risk and Compliance Officer (SMF4) for HSBC Innovation Banking UK, you’ll lead the risk agenda for a fast-moving, client-focused business supporting the innovation economy. You’ll set clear expectations for strong risk management and ethical conduct, ensure our Risk Management Framework is effective in practice, and build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and regulators.

This role is subject to regulatory approval and operates under the FCA Conduct Rules (COCON), including the Senior Manager Conduct Rules.

 

What you can expect to be doing:

Leadership, culture and conduct

  • Act as SMF4 and take reasonable steps to ensure effective control, regulatory compliance, appropriate delegation and timely regulatory disclosure (SC1–SC4)
  • Communicate HINV’s strategy, mission and vision, embedding HSBC values and a client-centric culture that operates with a strong risk culture
  • Lead a positive, open and co-operative relationship with the PRA, FCA, ICO and other regulators, including appropriate disclosures
  • Drive the people agenda: talent attraction, development, succession planning and a high-performance culture
  • Champion Inclusion—embedding it into policies, processes and decision-making, and partnering across the business to improve recruitment and progression outcomes

Risk governance and oversight

  • Oversee the operation and effectiveness of the HSBC Risk Management Framework within HINV
  • Chair the HINV Risk Management Meeting (RMM) and ensure clear, decision-ready reporting and escalation
  • Propose the HINV Risk Appetite Statement to RMM and OpCo for approval by the HINV Board
  • Oversee the development and implementation of risk policies, governance and risk management structure
  • Provide oversight of key functions and material risks, including:
    • UK Compliance (Chief Compliance Officer (SMF16))
    • UK Financial Crime (Head of Financial Crime and MLRO (SMF17))
    • UK Credit (Head of Credit), including UK lending decisions
    • Other Level 1 risks impacting HINV
  • Ensure the Model Risk Management Framework is operationalised effectively
  • Lead the identification and management of financial risks arising from climate change
  • Ensure responsibilities are discharged in line with HINV UK’s governance, operating model and regulatory reporting processes (including RRIS)

 

Requirements:

  • Proven senior leadership experience in risk management within UK financial services (banking and/or investment environment), ideally in a regulated SMF or equivalent accountable role
  • Strong working knowledge of the UK regulatory landscape (FCA/PRA), including COCON and Senior Manager expectations; confident engaging with regulators and managing supervisory relationships
  • Demonstrable experience setting risk appetite, leading risk governance forums, and driving effective oversight across multiple risk types (including credit, compliance, financial crime, model risk and operational risk)
  • Track record of building high-performing teams and partnering effectively across first and second line to enable sustainable growth
  • Strong judgement and decision-making under pressure, with the ability to balance pace, innovation and prudent risk management
  • Experience embedding ethical conduct and conduct risk management into culture, policies and day-to-day behaviours
  • Understanding of climate-related financial risks and how they translate into risk management and governance
