Associate Environmental and Sustainability Specialist

We are currently hiring within our reputed Infrastructure Finance team for an Environmental and Sustainability Associate
The Environmental and Sustainability (E&S) Associate will sit within the HIF team in London, supporting the team by reviewing transactions according to HSBC’s Sustainability Policies, particularly with respect to application of the Equator Principles. Positioned in the first line of defence, the E&S Associate will provide subject matter expertise and will help deal teams to manage E&S risks. This role offers exposure to E&S issues at a global level and across various financial products. The E&S Associate will independently assess deals, lead E&S due diligence, and contribute to internal strategic objectives. The E&S Associate should be a self-starter with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of environmental and sustainability issues.
Principal Responsibilities
- Evaluate E&S requirements for relevant transactions.
- Support deal teams by advising clients on E&S issues when necessary.
- Serve as an E&S subject matter expert and collaborate with key internal stakeholders on E&S aspects.
- Support internal E&S approval processes.
- Support monitoring of E&S performance on projects following Financial Close.
- Provide training and capacity building to bankers in E&S risk assessment.
- Provide analysis and deliverables related to E&S risks and procedures.
Qualifications
- Demonstrable, professional experience in environmental and social risk management, ideally within the financial services industry, consultancy firms, or key sectors such as transition infrastructure, mining, power, transport and commodities. On-the-ground experience of E&S management on major projects would be an advantage.
- Experience with infrastructure and/or export finance transactions, including an understanding of the market and relevant stakeholders, and of the lender E&S standards (Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, OECD Common Approaches etc.).
- Strong client and commercial focus.
- Ability to think strategically and envision short, medium, and long-term impacts of E&S initiatives.
- Knowledge of sustainable finance regulations and market developments, including taxonomies, Green and Social Loan Principles, the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and ESG product ratings etc.
- High levels of motivation and strong work ethic underpinned by enthusiasm about the infrastructure and export financing product.
- Excellent verbal and written communication (in English) and interpersonal skills, with ability to influence stakeholders within and outside the organization. Foreign language skills would be an advantage.
