You’ll apply proprietary models, algorithms and supporting infrastructure to help the Markets business price and manage risk for structured and derivative products within the Bank’s operational risk and governance requirements. You’ll work closely with stakeholders across technology and the broader eRisk franchise to improve systems and technical solutions. Success means robust research-led models that perform as intended in production and are supported by appropriate controls, monitoring and escalation. It also means fair outcomes for customers and conduct that supports orderly and transparent financial markets.

What you'll be doing

  • Own the definition, development, implementation, maintenance and performance monitoring of automated trading algorithms and strategies
  • Deliver agreed milestones within a fast-paced front office environment, balancing research, build and production priorities
  • Apply programming languages for statistical analysis and research including Python, R or Matlab and use q or SQL for data access
  • Implement production-grade components using Java where required to support automated trading deployment
  • Evaluate market microstructure and business logic and scientific fundamentals of algorithmic trading, methods of statistical analysis across FX or STIR high-frequency and mid/low frequency products
  • Partner with technology teams to improve systems, technical solutions and operational robustness of the trading platform
  • Understand and manage key risks, asking the right questions and making sound decisions in line with first line-of-defence responsibilities and the operational risk framework.
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external clients and communicate outcomes and constraints clearly
  • Embed operational risk, governance controls, escalation paths and first line of defence responsibilities in day-to-day delivery
  • Act in customers’ best interests while managing and escalating risks in line with HSBC Values, policies, and the Three Lines of Defence framework.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in a quantitative discipline
  • Relevant experience within a major electronic trading business, ideally in systematic trading or algorithmic market making
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of market microstructure and the scientific fundamentals of algorithmic trading
  • Statistical analysis skills and research practices to develop and validate models and algorithms
  • Publish research outputs such as academic papers or equivalent demonstrable contributions to quantitative research and documentation
  • Exposure to AI and machine learning methods
  • Use Python, R or Matlab for research and statistical work and use q or SQL to access and work with large datasets
  • Communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders and support fair treatment of customers in the eRisk franchise
  • Operate within market, credit, operational, regulatory and reputational risk frameworks including timely escalation and the Three Lines of Defence
