Associate, Hedge Fund Research
London, GB, E14 5HQ
Job description
If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.
We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.
We’re currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate, Hedge Fund Research.
This role sits in our Global Hedge Fund Research team in London and focuses on investment due diligence for third party-managed alternative investment funds. You’ll research global hedge fund strategies using fundamental bottom-up work to assess managers and make evidence-based recommendations to the Investment Committee. The scope spans sourcing prospective investments and monitoring existing holdings across an allocated portfolio of manager relationships. You’ll also contribute to broader strategy analysis and portfolio construction and partner closely with Global Private Banking and other client-facing teams. Success means producing decision-useful due diligence that stands up to scrutiny across Risk, Compliance and Legal and supporting timely, well-grounded investment decisions across the group. Periodic travel is expected to meet managers as required.
If you want to influence investment decisions through rigorous hedge fund research this role offers the scope to do it. You’ll combine manager evaluation with market and strategy insight to support a global alternatives platform. If this aligns with the kind of research you want to deliver, we’d welcome your application.
As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.
In this role you’ll:
- Conduct initial and ongoing due diligence on hedge fund managers including philosophy, process, organisation, team and alignment of interests
- Evaluate portfolio construction, liquidity, leverage, capacity, concentration and risk-management frameworks
- Assess performance using risk-adjusted returns, drawdowns, factor exposures, attribution and peer-relative results
- Run manager meetings, on-site visits, reference calls and due diligence interviews to validate investment propositions
- Monitor existing investments for changes in personnel, ownership, process, positioning and risk and escalate concerns promptly
- Produce due diligence reports, periodic review papers, monitoring notes, Investment Committee materials and client-facing commentary
- Present clear, evidence-based recommendations to the Investment Committee and senior stakeholders
- Contribute to top-down strategy research and portfolio assessments across allocation, diversification, liquidity and aggregate risk
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
- Bring relevant experience in hedge fund research or manager selection across third-party managers
- Apply strong working knowledge of hedge fund strategies, investment processes, portfolio construction and risk management
- Produce evidence-based due diligence reports and translate findings into clear investment recommendations
- Present conclusions effectively to Investment Committees and senior stakeholders, in writing and in person
- Evaluate performance and risk using attribution, factor exposures, drawdowns and peer-relative analysis
- Work effectively with Operational Due Diligence, Risk, Compliance and Legal to meet due diligence requirements
- Use Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word to build and communicate research outputs efficiently
- Maintain complete, accurate and timely research records while managing multiple reviews and deadlines
