Senior Internal Shariah Audit Manager

Global Internal Audit (GIA) provides independent, objective assurance to management and the HSBC Risk and Audit Committees as to whether the framework of risk management, control, and governance processes, as designed and represented by management, is adequate and functioning.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Internal Shariah Audit Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

• Support the Country Head of Audit in leading, developing, and delivering the Shariah Audit Plan, including annual audit planning, end-to-end execution of Shariah audits, and presentation of audit reports to senior management and the Shariah Committee.
• Lead and coordinate assigned audits within the Country Audit Plan, with accountability across the full audit lifecycle: audit announcement, team mobilisation, planning, fieldwork, documentation and review, issue drafting and agreement, report delivery, post-report issue validation, and ongoing stakeholder engagement.
• Ensure audits are completed efficiently and effectively, with due regard to the risks, scope, nature, and materiality of each in-scope entity.
• Ensure audit work is delivered in line with established audit methodology, quality standards, and relevant professional requirements, with appropriate documentation and timely reporting.
• Communicate issues and associated risks clearly to senior stakeholders and colleagues, building trust and credibility through constructive challenge and effective relationships.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including senior management, the Shariah Committee, and relevant first and second line of defence functions.
• Continuously monitor a defined portfolio of businesses/functions including the country’s Islamic Banking entity through ongoing risk assessment, continuous monitoring activities, regular stakeholder engagement, participation in governance forums, and analysis of changes in business strategy, products, and risk profile.
• Develop and support team members by agreeing development objectives, designing and delivering training, providing mentoring/coaching, and contributing to people initiatives that help the team perform at its best.
• Contribute to the wider development of Global Internal Audit by collaborating with other audit teams and identifying opportunities to use data analytics and innovation to deliver audit objectives effectively.

Requirements

• University degree and relevant professional qualification(s) in accountancy, finance, risk management, Islamic finance, Shariah and/or Islamic banking.
• Strong knowledge of Islamic Banking operations, Shariah compliance requirements, and general banking risks, processes, and controls.
• Ability to keep up to date with developments in banking and Islamic finance, including industry trends, markets, and regulatory expectations.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentation and influencing skills, with the ability to deliver difficult messages to senior stakeholders.
• Proven experience working in a dynamic, complex, and at times ambiguous environment, with achievements in a relevant function such as internal audit, Shariah risk, risk management, compliance, or business management.
• Experience in data analytics and/or second line of defence reviews is an advantage.
• Strong prioritisation and delivery skills, able to manage multiple concurrent projects and make pragmatic, well-reasoned decisions.
• A responsible team leader and player with a demonstrable commitment to helping the team achieve its objectives.
