Job description

The Financial Reporting and Tax Risk team provides effective stewardship of our external and tax reporting through strong subject matter expertise, with oversight of the control environment through timely and robust review and question. This function forms part of the second line of defence with a critical role in our firm’s risk management.

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Navigate and direct the stewardship function to facilitate effective risk management, through oversight of the framework, standards and processes that supports the assessment of HSBC’s management of Financial Reporting and Tax Risk.
  • Responsibility for ensuring that the approach to Financial Reporting and Tax Risk is appropriately defined and scoped, promoting and implementing synergies and efficiencies while securing an optimal and best in class control environment for HSBC.
  • You will collaborate, engage and manage senior relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You will be the Risk Steward for Financial Reporting and Tax Risk in HSBC, with delegated responsibility from the Group Chief Financial Officer. In this capacity you will be able to critique and facilitate change (where applicable) with the first line Process, Risk and Control owners to ensure that risk management activities are working effectively. This will include the following as per the Group’s Risk Management Framework:
  • Provide subject matter expertise, advice, guidance, and effective challenge to Process, Risk and Control Owners.
  • Support in setting the Risk Appetite and oversee risk appetite monitoring.
  • Deliver effective oversight of the control environment for our key reporting, including supporting prioritization of controls management, remediation and assurance efforts.
  • Report on the risk and control profiles, including impacts of external environment changes, emerging risks and changes to the business strategy.
  • Support the definition of the Risk and Control Library, including minimum control standards, with input from Risk Owners, and Control Owners, specifying key risks and key controls and providing guidance on continuous monitoring expectations.
  • Recommend Risk and Control Assessment (RCA) scoping, and challenge where this is not appropriately applied.
  • Review and question (where applicable) Risk and Control Owners on risk and control management, including inherent risk, residual risk, control effectiveness ratings, issues, actions and events; and
  • Review, question and agree the Financial Reporting and Tax Risk assurance plan. This will include identifying where target or demand-based assurance is required.

  • Ability to think independently and to make robust judgments based on a sound understanding of both the facts and the relevant rules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate well with all levels of staff, including senior and/or executive management. This should include evidence of influencing skills, required to ensure that deadlines are met, and service standards maintained.
  • Good written and communication skills at a senior leadership and management level.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and meet tight delivery deadlines.
  • Managing ambiguity and fast paced change management including story telling ability will be essential

 

To be successful you will:

 

  • Demonstrable Finance and control knowledge and experience working in multiple legal entities.
  • Detailed understanding of the Finance operating model at Group, Business and Country levels.
  • Experience in leading, implementing and/or improving end-to-end processes.
  • Knowledge of Financial Reporting and Tax Risk compliance procedures.
  • Experience of working within Enterprise Risk Management, Internal and External Audit.
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing effective and efficient controls culture within a global organization.
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging, motivating, coaching and directing a team (globally).
  • Collaborative, engaging, credible and methodical; being able to bring the numbers, policy and narrative to life (e.g., presenting to senior stakeholder audience and to be able to influence/ negotiate).
  • Experience of building and maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders (all levels of seniority, businesses, diversity of forums and geographies.

 

Others:

 

  • Thorough understanding of HSBC Group structures, values, behaviors, processes, and objectives.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of external environment within country (regulatory, political, economic and market).
  • Experience of operating in an environment of constantly changing priorities, challenging bureaucracy and staying true to the values and strategy of the Group.
  • Well-developed knowledge of operational, non-financial risk, control framework management and changing regulatory environment especially in the financial services sector.
  • Ability to manage and mitigate operational risk effectively, balancing the growth agenda with managing risk.
  • Evidence of effective execution of goals and delivery of clear results.
