The Role

The WPS Retail Delivery Head is a senior engineering leadership role responsible for end-to-end software engineering delivery across the Retail Banking portfolio within iWPB Wealth & Premier Solutions. The role sets technical direction while remaining hands-on across architecture, design and critical code-level decisions to deliver scalable, resilient and secure platforms. A key focus is advancing AI-augmented engineering practices across the SDLC including generative AI coding assistants and agentic workflows to improve delivery velocity and engineering quality. The role oversees mission-critical delivery outcomes while improving Run-the-Bank (RTB) efficiency through simplification, automation and legacy modernisation. Success looks like predictable delivery of high-quality software, measurable improvements in DORA metrics and strong governance across security, privacy and regulatory requirements.

What you'll be doing

• Set strategic technical direction across the Retail Banking engineering portfolio while staying hands-on in architecture and design decisions
• Oversee cross-functional teams delivering enterprise-scale retail banking software to agreed timelines, budgets and quality outcomes
• Champion AI-augmented SDLC practices including generative AI coding assistants, automated test generation and agentic workflows
• Establish engineering standards across clean code, microservices patterns, API-first design and modern DevSecOps automation
• Embed DORA metrics to benchmark delivery performance and improve deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate and time to restore service
• Strengthen RTB efficiency through technical debt remediation, system simplification, self-healing automation and legacy modernisation
• Partner with business stakeholders, product owners and enterprise architects to translate objectives into delivery roadmaps and value outcomes
• Govern delivery against HSBC security baselines, architectural governance, data privacy mandates and financial regulatory requirements

What we're looking for

• Bring substantial senior software engineering leadership experience delivering large-scale, mission-critical retail banking or enterprise platforms from concept to production
• Demonstrate deep hands-on full-stack capability across modern front-end, microservices and enterprise engineering with active involvement in code reviews and complex debugging
• Apply practical expertise in AI-driven engineering transformation including AI coding tools, LLM integrations and modern CI/CD and DevSecOps approaches
• Show proven capability in architecture and technical design across complex legacy-to-modern transitions and high-volume transactional systems
• Use DORA metrics, telemetry and engineering dashboards to improve productivity, release velocity and software quality
• Demonstrate coaching and stakeholder management experience across diverse technical teams and executive-level partners
• Bring strong domain knowledge in Retail Banking, Wealth Management or Financial Services including security, data privacy and regulatory compliance
• Demonstrate equivalent knowledge and capability gained through substantial engineering practice and delivery accountability in regulated environments
