CTO Data Technology – CIB & HBEU is focussed on working with partners across CIB, MSS & ESG Technology to maintain and evolve a fit-for-purpose Strategy Data Platform

The Opportunity:

Join us to shape the next generation of our data platform.

This is a future-focused role for a senior data engineering professional who can bring deep Hadoop platform expertise, lead real-time data processing initiatives, and help uplift our overall data platform capability. You will work across architecture, engineering, and enablement to build scalable, resilient, and business-ready data foundations. Experience with GCP and Alibaba Cloud is a strong advantage, and hands-on exposure to AI agent solutions is highly valued.

They will be required to continually enhance their skills within a number of specialisms which include front end, development, security, testing, and operational support.

What you’ll do:

• Design, build, and optimize large-scale data pipelines on Hadoop and distributed data platforms.
• Lead implementation of real-time and streaming data solutions for low-latency use cases.
• Improve platform reliability, scalability, observability, and performance across batch and streaming workloads.
• Partner with data, analytics, and product teams to translate business requirements into robust platform capabilities.
• Drive platform modernization and uplift initiatives, including architecture standards, reusable frameworks, and engineering best practices.
• Support cloud-aligned deployment patterns and integrations, with exposure to GCP and Alibaba Cloud environments.
• Mentor engineers and promote strong engineering discipline in data quality, governance, and operational excellence.

What you will need to succeed in the role:

• Strong hands-on experience with Hadoop ecosystem technologies and distributed data platforms.
• Proven expertise in real-time data processing and streaming architecture (design, implementation, and operations).
• Solid software engineering fundamentals, including coding, testing, CI/CD, and production support.
• Experience designing scalable, fault-tolerant, and secure data platform components.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex data pipeline and platform issues in production environments.
• Strong stakeholder communication skills and ability to work across technical and business teams.
• Ownership mindset, with the ability to independently lead initiatives from concept to delivery.

What additional skills will be good to have?

• Practical experience with GCP data services and platform tooling.
• Exposure to Alibaba Cloud data and compute ecosystem.
• Experience with AI agent frameworks or agent-enabled automation use cases.
• Familiarity with data governance, lineage, metadata management, and platform compliance controls.
• Knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms for data workloads.
• Background in performance tuning and cost optimization for large-scale data systems.
