Job description

Some careers have more impact than others.

If you’re looking for a career where you can make a real impression, join HSBC and discover how valued you’ll be.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Senior Consultant Specialist.

Business: IWPB Technology

Principal responsibilities

1) End-to-end service ownership (AWS API platform)

  • Own reliability and operational readiness for API services deployed on AWS across multiple environments (dev/test/stage/prod).
  • Drive service lifecycle management: onboarding, runbooks, SLO/SLI definition, capacity planning, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with engineering, security, and operations teams to ensure production standards are met before release.

2) Observability, monitoring, and alerting

  • Design and implement monitoring and service status visibility (dashboards, service health views, dependency mapping).
  • Build actionable alerting (noise reduction, correlation, severity models, on-call readiness).
  • Use and optimise tooling such as AppDynamicsSplunk, CloudWatch (and related AWS-native telemetry) to enable fast detection and diagnosis.

3) API gateway and traffic management

  • Operate and optimise Kong Gateway (or equivalent) for routing, rate limiting, throttling, authentication integration, and policy enforcement.
  • Ensure gateway configuration supports resilience patterns (timeouts, retries, circuit breakers where appropriate) and safe deployments.

4) Authentication, authorisation, and security controls

  • Work with IAM/security teams to ensure strong authentication/authorisation controls (e.g., OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, token validation, secrets management).
  • Embed security-by-design into operational processes: secure configuration, least privilege, audit logging, and environment hardening.

5) Resilience engineering and DR

  • Define and implement resilience patterns: multi-AZ design, failover strategies, graceful degradation, and dependency resilience.
  • Lead DR planning, testing, and evidence capture (RTO/RPO alignment, runbooks, game days).
  • Conduct chaos/resilience testing and drive remediation of systemic weaknesses.

6) Incident management and problem management

  • Lead major incident response (triage, coordination, communications, recovery).
  • Perform incident analysis (RCA), identify root causes, and drive corrective/preventative actions.
  • Improve operational maturity: post-incident learning, trend analysis, and reliability backlog management.

7) CI/CD, release reliability, and environment management

  • Partner with engineering teams to improve CI/CD pipelines and release safety (progressive delivery, canary/blue-green, automated rollback).
  • Standardise environment provisioning and configuration management (IaC preferred).
  • Ensure operational controls are in place for change management and production releases.

8) Database and dependency reliability

  • Provide reliability guidance for databases and stateful components (performance, backup/restore, replication, patching, capacity).
  • Monitor and improve dependency health (queues, caches, third-party services) and define clear operational ownership.

9) Vulnerability management (CVE) and patching

  • Own/drive operational response to CVE and vulnerability findings: triage, risk assessment, patch planning, and verification.
  • Coordinate with security and engineering to ensure timely remediation and compliance reporting.

10) Leadership and stakeholder management

  • Lead and mentor SRE/operations engineers; set standards, ways of working, and on-call practices.
  • Communicate reliability posture to senior stakeholders using clear metrics (SLO attainment, incident trends, MTTR, change failure rate).

Build strong cross-team collaboration across product, engineering, security, and platform teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years’ experience in fintech or regulated financial services operating customer-facing digital platforms.
  • Proven experience leading SRE/production operations for cloud-based services, ideally AWS.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • API gateways (Kong preferred) and API platform operations
    • Observability tooling: AppDynamicsSplunk (plus log/metric/trace best practices)
    • Incident management, RCA, and operational governance
    • CI/CD pipelines and release engineering practices
    • Security controls: IAM, secrets management, secure configuration, vulnerability/CVE remediation
    • Database operations and performance troubleshooting (SQL/NoSQL exposure beneficial)
  • Strong understanding of reliability engineering concepts: SLI/SLO, error budgets, capacity planning, resilience patterns, DR.

Technical skills (preferred)

  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform/CloudFormation (or equivalent)
  • Containers and orchestration: Docker/Kubernetes/EKS (if applicable to your stack)
  • Scripting/automation: Python, Bash, or similar
  • AWS services commonly used in API platforms (e.g., EC2/ECS/EKS, ALB/NLB, Route 53, CloudWatch, IAM, KMS, RDS/DynamoDB, S3)

Soft skills / behaviours

  • Calm, structured leadership during high-severity incidents.
  • Strong stakeholder communication—able to translate technical risk into business impact.
  • Bias for automation and continuous improvement; pragmatic and delivery-focused.
  • Collaborative mindset across engineering, security, and operations (“we succeed together”).
