The Role

Hong Kong Technology is a global organisation of 3,000+ employees, primarily based in Hong Kong and our Strategic Development Centres in Guangzhou and Xi’an. We’re hiring a Principal Engineer to act as the technical anchor for Hong Kong Technology across platforms and capabilities. This is a hands-on engineering leadership role that sets direction for architectures, standards, tools and ways of working across the full software lifecycle - build, run, change and retire. The role partners closely with Architecture, Cybersecurity and product owners to align engineering outcomes to strategic objectives. Success means consistent engineering standards, high-cadence low-risk delivery and platforms that support core banking transformation, card platform modernisation and digital platform transformation. A key focus is enabling growth in the Non-Resident Chinese (NRC) segment.

What you'll be doing

• Define and evolve reference engineering standards for core platforms aligned to the Hong Kong Future State Architecture
• Oversee end-to-end delivery across the software development lifecycle including coding, testing, release and production support
• Run peer reviews to strengthen platform consistency, reusability and compliance with enterprise standards
• Champion DevSecOps, CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code across engineering teams
• Steer the control transition to using agentic AI coding assistants
• Create, refine and enforce development standards so technology remains sustainable and scalable
• Mentor senior engineers and influence technical delivery across multiple squads and geographies
• Represent engineering excellence in cross-platform technology councils and architecture forums

What we're looking for

• Bring a strong engineering background with the ability to set strategy and work hands-on with engineering teams
• Demonstrate a proven track record designing and delivering enterprise-scale transformation and simplification
• Apply experience with streaming and near-real-time patterns for Risk and Finance use cases
• Use practical experience with distributed processing frameworks and workflow orchestration
• Show a good understanding of Financial Services including Finance and Financial Risk domains
• Apply knowledge across the full stack including containers, Kubernetes, cloud, microservices, data lakes, storage and networking in cloud environments
• Provide technical and conceptual thought leadership to navigate ambiguity and stakeholder disagreement to reach outcomes
• Communicate clearly in writing and verbally with experience influencing senior stakeholders and presenting persuasively
