Principal responsibilities
- Deliver new features and enhancements across a Java / Clojure / Rust technology stack, following agreed engineering standards and SDLC controls.
- Design, build and optimise caching solutions to enable low-latency access to trade data, tailored to different access patterns and use cases (e.g., intraday pricing, EOD valuation, downstream distribution).
- Engineer for performance and resilience: profiling, tuning, capacity planning and improving throughput/latency under peak workloads.
- Provide rota-based L2/L3 production support, including incident triage, root-cause analysis, defect fixes and driving problem management to reduce repeat issues.
- Partner with the business across FX and GDM to understand priorities, translate requirements into robust technical solutions, and deliver iteratively with clear outcomes.
- Work closely with stakeholders, architects and a broad set of end users to ensure solution alignment, technical compatibility and a strong user experience.
- Ensure compliance with relevant internal control standards and external regulatory requirements, including auditability, access controls, data handling and change management.
- Maintain an up-to-date understanding of FICC business processes and system capabilities, and proactively identify opportunities to simplify, modernise and reduce operational overhead.
Knowledge & Experience/Qualifications
- 8+ years’ experience in software engineering, with a strong track record delivering production-grade backend services in a senior individual contributor role.
- Expert-level Java (server-side) development, including concurrency, performance tuning, and building low-latency/high-throughput systems.
- Hands-on experience with functional and/or systems programming in Clojure and/or Rust (or demonstrable ability to pick up quickly in a polyglot environment).
- Strong database engineering experience across both relational and NoSQL technologies, including PostgreSQL, Oracle and MongoDB (data modelling, query optimisation, indexing, and performance troubleshooting).
- Proven experience designing and implementing caching strategies for low-latency access (e.g., in-memory/distributed caches, cache invalidation, consistency patterns).
- Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts: resiliency, fault tolerance, observability, capacity planning, and workload management.
- Experience building and operating services in a production environment, including on-call/rota-based L2/L3 support, incident management and root-cause analysis.
- Strong analysis and design skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into pragmatic, maintainable technical solutions.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, able to work effectively with global BAs/PMs, architects, production support and end users.
- Familiarity with SDLC controls, change management, and working within regulated environments with strong audit and compliance expectations.
