We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Software Engineering.

Principal responsibilities
- Establish, maintain and grow a cross-team community of API and Cloud engineers.
- Define, govern and promote the “HSBC way” of engineering for APIs and Cloud platforms.
- Design, maintain and continuously improve CI/CD tools, build pipelines and developer tooling.
- Collaborate with technical leaders, product owners and stakeholders on product strategy, roadmaps, architecture and requirements.
- Mentor and grow engineers (junior to senior), share best practices and raise technical standards across teams.
- Recruit and onboard talent in partnership with regional Heads of Engineering and the recruiting team to build diverse, high-performing teams.
- Advocate modern software practices (DevOps, Agile, open source) and foster a strong engineering culture.
- Participate in platform-level architecture discussions and act as a technical escalation point.
- Promote quality and testability be an ambassador for writing testable code and enforcing the definition of done.
- Document technical solutions and contribute to knowledge sharing (show & tells, blogs, community talks).
- Actively participate in the API & Cloud Engineering Discipline and related communities.
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications
- BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong practical experience with Java, microservices and Cloud platforms.
- Proven experience as a Lead / Senior API and Cloud Engineer or equivalent in large-scale API engineering environments.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines and developer tooling.
- Demonstrated leadership and people skills, including mentoring and coaching engineers.
- Experience working in Agile/DevOps environments and promoting modern development practices.
- Track record of driving improvements that increase developer productivity and software quality.
- Experience collaborating across multiple engineering centres/regions.
- Excellent communication skills and experience presenting technical topics (show & tells, blogs, internal talks).
Desirable
- Passion for open source practices and community-driven development.
- Experience acting as a gatekeeper for release quality and definition of done.
