Role Purpose:
The Chief Risk and Compliance Officer for Mauritius (CRCO) is the primary point of accountability for all risk and compliance matters in the country including its legal, regulatory and other compliance obligations. The purpose of the role is to lead and direct the effective identification, assessment, management, monitoring, and mitigation of risk, ensuring that we meet all legal and regulatory requirements and operate within risk appetite.
Key risk types comprise counterparty credit risk, data risk, financial crime risk, regulatory compliance, technology and cybersecurity risk, traded and treasury risk and operational risk and resilience.
The CRCO for Mauritius reports functionally to the Head of Risk & Compliance - International Markets Asia and on an entity basis to the market CEO. The CRCO is responsible for providing counsel, advice and challenge to the market leadership for key business decisions within the country and to develop market and line of business strategies and, where required, controls based on thorough understanding of key trends, opportunities and threats impacting the market.
The CRCO for Mauritius sets the risk and compliance strategy and appetite for the country and leads and oversees the Risk and Compliance function within it.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Leads and direct the stewardship of Mauritius, as a partner to the business, supporting growth aspirations whilst retaining the appropriate risk and compliance management discipline to achieve the Group’s strategic goals.
- Ensures effective relationships with the Mauritius regulators.
- Supports Regional Risk and Compliance leadership and country leadership in setting key functional targets (e.g. risk appetite) within Group guardrails.
- Fosters a strong risk, control, and compliance culture, including ensuring adequate management focus and demonstrative “tone from the top”.
- Strengthens risk management by incorporating risk and compliance considerations in all activities undertaken to protect and enable the business’ activities through a robust risk management understanding.
- Oversees the application of the HSBC Risk Management Framework to enhance, standardise and integrate the various risk activities including the implementation of strategic projects and systems.
- Develops, monitors and communicates Mauritius Risk and Compliance strategy, policies and appetite throughout the Mauritius business.
- Maintains cost discipline and drives improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of risk management activity.
- Acts in accordance with HSBC’s purpose and values, being cognisant of all applicable local legal, fiscal, regulatory requirements to deliver good and fair outcomes for customers and other stakeholders.
- Complete required Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Sanctions training and post-course assessment.
Role Requirements:
- Experienced risk and compliance professional with tenure in a leadership position, ideally within a global financial services organization.
- Good knowledge and management of legal, regulatory and compliance obligations.
- Experience of building, developing and leading a sizeable team.
- Experience of managing within a complex matrix environment.
- Experience of dealing with regulatory matters and confident interaction with regulators.
- Proven ability to proactively and constructively engage with senior management, clients, regulators, auditors and examiners.
