The Assistant Shariah Manager acts as the primary risk steward for ensuring technical adherence to Shariah requirements. The role requires strong oversight and management capability to review, organize and support Islamic Finance transactions undertaken by CIB within the HSBC Group, ensuring they are executed in line with the CIB FIM, the Shariah standards accepted by the HBME Internal Shariah Supervision Committee and the Global Shariah Supervision Committee (the “Shariah Committees”), and the HBME Shariah Risk Management Framework. The role also supports the Head of Islamic Finance Control in meeting oversight and governance responsibilities for the Shariah-compliant business. A key focus is to ensure that controls for Islamic Finance transactions are robust and effective, and that all governance, regulatory and compliance requirements are met.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support the Head of Islamic Finance Control by reviewing product and financing documentation assigned by managers to confirm Shariah compliance and alignment with the general and/or specific guidelines and approvals of the Internal Shariah Supervision Committee (ISSC).
- Support the Head of Islamic Finance Control in implementing Islamic banking regulations issued by the Higher Shariah Authority and the Central Bank of the UAE.
- Help embed the agreed Shariah Review Process across all business units, and coordinate Shariah assurance activities performed by the Shariah Committee and internal compliance teams.
- Assist in managing relationships with Shariah scholars, industry bodies, and external legal counsel/law firms.
- Support local implementation of Group Compliance policy by helping to manage and contain compliance risk in coordination with Global/Area/Local Compliance Officers; contribute to ensuring adequate compliance resources and training, strengthening a culture of compliance, and maintaining effective relationships with regulators.
- Conduct Shariah research as requested by the ISSC and contribute, in an advisory capacity, to the development and enhancement of products, processes, and policies.
- Support delivery of ongoing Shariah learning and training for key internal stakeholders, including senior management, board members, and relevant staff.
- Provide secretariat support to the ISSC and SCGC, including finalizing agendas and preparing meeting minutes.
- Comply with all applicable internal and external rules, regulations, and procedures, particularly Internal Controls and Compliance policy; maintain strong awareness of operational risk and act accordingly.
- Support the UAE CRO on technical matters by overseeing Shariah risk reviews of key governance papers and assisting in preparing materials for relevant risk committees.
- Assist the UAE CRO with day-to-day Shariah risk management and stakeholder communication, including reviewing papers for governance forums, tracking actions, and drafting presentations and reports as needed.
- Build effective collaboration across functions, businesses, and the region, drawing on a sound understanding of risk strategy and operational risk concepts; demonstrate strong organizational skills, clear communication, continuous improvement, and behavior aligned with HSBC values.
Experience & Qualifications:
- A graduation degree is essential for obtaining a UAE visa and work permit. If your university certificate is from outside the UAE, up-to-date attestations and equivalency are also mandatory (Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications Issued Outside The UAE)
- Bachelor’s degree in law, Shariah Law, or Islamic Jurisprudence, preferably from UAE national universities where possible.
- 0–3 years’ experience in an Internal Shariah Control function; knowledge of AAOIFI Shariah Standards is an advantage.
- Strong English proficiency with good spoken Arabic.
- AAOIFI or CIBAFI professional certification is an added advantage.
- Demonstrates strong ownership and accountability, effective teamwork and interpersonal skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to work to tight deadlines within a large and diverse team.
