Role purpose
The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Controllers team within Finance is responsible for the strategy, preparation, review, and submission of mandatory ESG/sustainability disclosures for HSBC Mexico. The team works closely with Sustainability, Risk, Finance, Legal, HR, and other global functions to deliver timely, accurate, and well-governed disclosures. Its remit includes establishing consistent global standards, enhancing disclosure controls and data lineage, improving transparency, and driving continuous improvement across processes, metrics, and enabling technology.
Role Summary
The role defines, implements, and embeds HSBC’s global sustainability reporting policy framework, governance model, and disclosure control environment. It places particular emphasis on influencing senior stakeholders and supporting critical decision-making as the Group and local entities build foundational policies and frameworks to meet regulatory obligations. The role provides enterprise leadership across policy design, regulatory interpretation, executive engagement, regulatory-grade delivery, and coordination across global and local stakeholders.
Additionally, this role executes the process of preparing all Mexico financial reporting fulfilling to the highest standards, ensuring correct application of policy, appropriate control frameworks are in place and that accounting and reporting risks are identified and mitigated, comply with requirements related to information to be disclosed to the market including press release and financial statements notes
Main activities
- Execute the correct accounting records in compliance with local, international, and internal regulations.
- General coordination of the accounting closing process.
- Policy, Standards & Methodology
- Draft, implement, and maintain policies, standards, and procedures covering governance, roles and responsibilities, materiality, and controls, aligned to relevant global and local standards (e.g., CSRD/ESRS, ISSB/IFRS S1 & S2, CUE, CUB).
- Embed sustainability reporting within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework and taxonomy, strengthening ESG-specific disclosure controls and procedures.
- Regulatory Change Management & Thought Leadership
- Lead engagement with regulatory policy teams and local regulators to interpret and translate regulatory changes into actionable requirements.
- Provide authoritative input on emerging sustainability disclosure regulations and represent the organisation in relevant industry forums, including the ABM (Asociación de Bancos de México).
- Mexico Alignment
- Oversee alignment of Mexico ESG disclosures with Group requirements, partnering with local and Group Finance and regulatory reporting teams to ensure consistency of narrative, data, and controls while meeting local obligations.
Requirements
- 10+ years' experience in financial, regulatory, or ESG reporting, risk governance, or related disciplines within financial services or Big 4.
- Strong knowledge of ESRS, ISSB, and IFRS S1 & S2.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a large organisation, synthesise complex inputs, and establish repeatable, standardised processes for governance and reporting.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and presentation skills with executive presence; able to influence senior leaders and drive alignment across diverse groups.
- Strong strategic and technical problem-solving capability, including identifying discrepancies and mobilising cross-functional solutions.
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
