Job description

HSBC is seeking to hire an individual in the role of senior manager - Chinese translation,  to lead the planning, management and delivery of high-quality translations from English into traditional Chinese (and simplified Chinese where required). You will translate and oversee the production of key financial and regulatory documents for HSBC Holdings plc and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, helping shape how the organisation communicates with regulators, shareholders and the public in Hong Kong.

This is a role for someone who combines outstanding language and translation capability with confidence operating in an intense, deadline-driven reporting environment—where accuracy, judgement and planning are essential skills. 

In this role you will:

  • Managing and executing the translation to traditional Chinese of the following financial documents:HSBC Holdings plc Annual Report and Accounts, News Release, Interim report, Earnings Release,
    and Pillar 3, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation ARA, IR, News Release, Pillar 3/BDO
  • Additionally, Company Secretariat will require the translation of various shareholder announcements, including, but not limited to, the Annual General Meeting Notice, any shareholder meeting scripts as required, executive and Board changes. There may be other ad-hoc translation requests of significant importance to the Group.

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

  • HSBC aims to consistently lead the financial industry in terms of transparency, completeness and accuracy of its disclosures and documents to support investor decisions, maintain regulatory compliance and our strong reputation in Hong Kong. The role holder’s work will help to drive local Chinese language understanding and awareness of HSBC Group strategy and developments.
  • Help protect HSBC against regulatory and reputational risks
  • Successful production of regulatory and shareholder materials in the Chinese language (mainly traditional Chinese) – accurately, timely and within budget, as required by FS&GEC or by Company Secretariat
  • Production of Chinese-language materials under prescribed Compliance and information risk requirements
  • Always seek to achieve zero-fault performance.
  • Responsible for signing off Chinese translations of regulatory documents on stakeholders’ behalf.
  • Support stakeholders’ needs for in-house translation/vetting of designated sensitive materials or corporate communication materials

Leadership & Teamwork 

  • Help to manage external vendors (up to 12 third party service providers from 3 or 4 different vendors during the busiest period of the year). Service providers are currently based from HK but may also be located in mainland China.  
  • Give strong guidance for service providers to ensure consistent delivery of quality work in line with HSBC’s requirements
  • Help to manage freelancers in production of Chinese press releases for Group/HBAP financial results and shareholder documents to regulatory timelines, accuracy, and stakeholders’ requirements

To be successful you will need:

  • Significant experience translating corporate and financial communications into traditional Chinese from English.
  • Fluent English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional translation quality with a proven ability to handle complex financial and regulatory content.
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of accountability for accuracy.
  • Ability to work to fixed deadlines under time pressure and manage multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, including the ability to coordinate effectively with external service providers.
  • Able to work independently and drive forward process improvements.
  • Strong knowledge of Chinese culture and written language, with sensitivity and sound judgement around wording and context.

The base location for this role is in Hong Kong and with a hybrid working pattern. The role holder will be expected to work from an office location during key project cycles.
