This business is uniquely positioned to help clients make payments across borders, currencies and regulations, quickly and efficiently with dedicated in-country and regional support. Our expertise in this area is repeatedly recognised by the industry’s most prominent publications and associations with numerous global, regional, and country awards.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our Hong Kong business as Director - DAC Settlement and Collaboration.

Role purpose

HSBC’s Global Payments Solutions (GPS) Digital Currencies Team develops and scales digital-currency-enabled capabilities that evolve our payments, settlement, and currency clearing propositions. The team works across business lines and geographies to shape client propositions, build partnerships and industry collaborations, and deliver controlled innovation in areas such as tokenised money, wholesale digital currency models, and next-generation settlement mechanisms.

In this global role, you’ll own the digital-currencies settlement capability agenda within GPS and lead strategic collaborations with industry utilities, central banks, market infrastructures, fintechs and partners to deliver interoperable, well-governed settlement propositions aligned to HSBC’s control expectations. The remit includes settlement models for multiple classes of tokenised assets (for example, tokenised deposits/cash instruments, securities and funds), and the connectivity patterns required to integrate with external asset platforms and core market infrastructure—such as clearing and settlement infrastructures, Central Securities Depositories (CSDs) and other relevant venues and utilities. Industry attention is increasingly focused on ensuring tokenised settlement models can interoperate with existing rails and infrastructure, while multi party initiatives—through utilities, consortia and pilots—are shaping emerging standards, rulebooks and operating models. As initiatives progress from pilot to scale, expectations also rise around controls, operational resilience, settlement finality considerations and robust third party governance.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the settlement strategy for Digital Assets enabled by Digital Currencies, covering target use cases, operating model, control framework, and delivery roadmap
  • Ensure end-to-end accountability for settlement solution outcomes jointly with Digital Assets team, from design through implementation to BAU readiness
  • Define settlement models and standards (e.g., DvP, PvP) and ensure they are fit-for-purpose across products and markets
  • Support and evolve existing offerings (e.g. Orion, Digital Custody, collateral trading) by strengthening settlement connectivity and scalability
  • Identify and progress new settlement use cases (e.g., tokenised MMFs, tokenised ETFs, tokenised loans and additional DA offerings), including feasibility, prioritisation, and delivery mobilisation
  • Partner with Digital Assets, GPS product, Market and Securities Services, coverage, and implementation teams to shape client-relevant settlement propositions and solution designs
  • Engage with external industry participants (market infrastructures, technology partners, consortia) to inform strategy, interoperability, and adoption pathways
  • Maintain close interaction with regulators and internal regulatory engagement teams to ensure solutions align to evolving regulatory expectations
  • Coordinate cross-team inputs (product, legal, risk, compliance, ops, tech, implementation) to remove blockers and deliver a seamless end-to-end settlement capability
  • Drive alignment across issuance, transacting, custody and trading infrastructure to ensure coherent architecture and operating model
  • Ensure strong follow-through from strategy and design into delivery execution, operational readiness, and controlled BAU adoption
  • Identify recurring settlement frictions (process, technology, controls, legal/regulatory) and drive continuous improvement with operations and tech partners
  • Lead through influence across a matrix organisation; create clarity on ownership, timelines, and next steps to keep momentum
  • Build an inclusive, collaborative culture across regions and functions, ensuring diverse perspectives are incorporated into solution design and risk decisions
  •

Requirements

  • Significant experience in digital assets / digital currencies settlement strategy, market infrastructure connectivity, or post-trade/settlement transformation within financial services
  • Proven track record delivering complex, multi-party solutions across product, technology, operations, and control functions
  • Strong compliance and risk management experience with demonstrable track record operating in regulated environments
  • Strong domain knowledge of blockchain and DeFi practices relevant to institutional use cases
  • Deep understanding of wallet management and operational controls
  • Strong knowledge of settlement models and mechanisms (DvP, PvP) and their application to tokenised assets and tokenised cash
  • Experience across asset issuance, trading workflows, and custodian needs (including integration patterns with custody and trading infrastructure)
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory landscape and latest regulations impacting digital assets/digital currencies, with evidence of active engagement with industry players
  • Strong stakeholder management across Sales, Product, Market and Securities Services, Technology, Operations, Risk/Compliance, Legal, and external partners
  • Strategic thinking with execution discipline, be able to translate strategy into delivery plans and drive actions to closure
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to create crisp narratives for senior stakeholders and governance
  • Sound judgement and control mindset: designs solutions with compliance, risk management, and operational resilience embedded
  • University degree minimum, or equivalent professional experience
