The Risk & Compliance (R&C) function is HSBC’s Second Line of Defence, responsible for reviewing and challenging the activities of the Group’s businesses to ensure effective risk management. With a global headcount of ~14,000 and annual costs of ~$1.5bn, R&C is evolving its operating model, requiring robust oversight, administration, and management. This role is pivotal in supporting the R&C CAO CoE, driving operational excellence, and enabling strategic objectives in a dynamic, highly scrutinized environment.

HSBC is going through an unprecedented period of change in its move to a sustainable globally led and connected organisation. There is increasing external scrutiny and pressure on the Financial Services industry from governments, regulators, media, investors and brokers. The role holder needs to understand the impact of all these changes on Risk & Compliance and HSBC and support the Global R&C COO, Global R&C CAO and Head CAO CoE as necessary. The role holder will be required to interact with many internal and external parties at the highest level of management and therefore needs an outstanding level of professionalism and gravitas.

As a Senior Business Manager within the R&C CoE, you will provide dedicated, forward-thinking financial and operational management support to LoBs and Global R&C Sub-functions. You’ll act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, proactively managing financial performance, driving operational efficiency, and supporting people strategy. This is a senior role requiring strong leadership, stakeholder management, and the ability to influence across a matrixed, global environment.

This is a senior role reporting to the R&C Head of CAO CoE India. You’ll interact with global, regional, and LoB stakeholders, providing dedicated, forward-thinking financial and operational management support. You’ll lead a team, share best practices globally, and influence positive change across the function.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of risk management, operational strategy, strong leadership and influencing skills. 

In this role, you will:

The individual will be required to share best practice globally, influence stakeholder teams in a positive manner, and manage a team. Some of the key responsibilities include:

•Partner with the Global R&C CAO team to oversee all aspects of financial management and performance for assigned LoBs and Global Sub-functions.Develop, track, and analyse the Functional Resource Plan (FRP) and workforce plan.Challenge direct and indirect cost performance, identifying risks and opportunities.

•Analyse Forecast direct costs and FTEs, including headwind review and approval of out-of-plan needs.Manage robust financial plans with global teams (PADs) to enable effective delivery of R&C services.

•Review, approve, and track consultancy and third-party spend.Coordinate the creation and achievement of operating plans, recommending and implementing cost-saving actions.Govern resourcing processes and headcount approval to support strategic hiring.

•Lead and manage direct reports, ensuring effective performance management, talent management, and succession planning.Support with scenario modelling for the corresponding SF or LoB

•Support PADs (LoBs & Sub-functions), Global R&C CAO, and Head CAO CoE India with all aspects of business management, including cost and performance.Provide consistent, high-quality Management Information (MI) on business performance at the LoB/sub-function level to support management decision-making.

•Handle complex operational demands and develop sustainable processes to strengthen hiring, budget, financial management, and reporting capabilities.

•Develop and maintain strong, professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including R&C leadership, executive and senior management of GBs, GFs, Finance, and HR.

•Identify and execute opportunities to drive cost reduction, resulting in sustainable savings and achievement of cost targets.Engage with stakeholders globally and regionally to identify themes and emerging issues across Risk&Compliance.

•Provide constructive challenge to existing practices and proposed initiatives, generating innovative solutions to complex issues.

•Act as de facto deputy to the Head CAO CoE India, managing and coordinating team priorities, goals, and objectives.Serve as point of contact in the Head’s absence.

The role holder will need to be dynamic, and service oriented with a can-do attitude. It will be a critical element to ensure that the individual can prioritise and ensure it meets the ongoing needs.

 

To be successful you will:

Knowledge & Qualifications

•High degree of expertise in all business management activities.Considerable experience in financial and business planning within an international banking environment or within HSBC.

•Strong understanding of the external banking environment (regulatory, political, competitive).Detailed understanding of the HSBC Group Operating Model across all Global Businesses.

•Strong awareness of HSBC’s internal control and operational risk environment.Excellent understanding of the purpose, values, culture, and framework of Risk & Compliance and the broader HSBC organisation.Knowledge of best practices in data governance and tools-based data quality improvement.

•Demonstrated success in budgetary management, resource management, financial planning, and executive reporting.Proven track record in delivering performance improvement and applying innovative thinking.

•Experience managing customer and stakeholder issues in a matrix organisational context.Global project management experience.

•Strong understanding of evolving risk environments.Strong performance as a leader of high-performing teams in a similar matrix environment.
