We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Associate Director, Financial Crime DE Future Design.
In this role, you will:
- The role holder will be accountable for Active Risk Stewardship, including Provide technical guidance to ensure stakeholders understand the resilience control environment and risk assessments, proportionate to the scale and complexity of operations. Translate issues, incidents, and top/emerging risks into clear business impacts for Lines of Business and key stakeholders, recommending changes to controls, resources, or operating models to remain within risk appetite.
- Enable risk and control owners to assess evidence control design and operating effectiveness, and to address gaps promptly. Track external developments (e.g., regulatory, technology, threat landscape) to identify emerging resilience risks and specify the controls required to mitigate them. Provide targeted resilience risk expertise to help the First Line of Defense (1LoD) implement, operate, and sustain key mitigating controls.
- Provide technical input to GRR and regulatory reporting (e.g., RAS, top & emerging risks, risk profile reporting, RMM, and relevant Board reporting), ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timeliness. Ensure root causes of resilience risk issues and events are identified, validated, and remediated with sustainable corrective actions. Identify and escalate concerns relating to key controls and material change programs, ensuring appropriate governance and decision-making.
- Partner with Lines of Business, key stakeholders, and 1LoD to drive timely escalation, resolution, and clear ownership of actions. Support regulatory and audit engagement on resilience risk, ensuring compliance and on-time closure of audit actions and findings. Build capability through training, coaching, and practical guidance to strengthen resilience risk awareness and execution to ensure robust understanding of resilience risks.
- Represent GRR with key internal stakeholders, building trusted relationships and clear lines of accountability. Shape a forward-looking agenda on emerging risks and resilience challenges, supporting proactive decision-making. Oversee 1LoD adoption of standards, processes, and procedures to deliver policy objectives and embed the Risk Framework, working closely with risk control owners.
- Provide oversight, constructive challenge, and guidance to 1LoD risk and control owners across entities/countries, enabling growth and innovation within risk appetite. Communicate effectively across technical and business audiences, ensuring delivery aligns to Bank and GRR objectives and is understood at all levels. Support team delivery in line with functional manager direction, including day-to-day management of direct reports where applicable.
- Role-model and reinforce positive risk culture behaviors, mentoring colleagues across global virtual teams. Strengthen engagement and inclusion, ensuring all colleagues can contribute and succeed.
- Support transformation programs by identifying resilience risks early and influencing mitigations through delivery. Partner with other oversight functions and Internal/External Audit to maintain a holistic view of the risk profile, including leading closure of audit points and management self-identified issues when directed.
- Delivery services aligned to the service catalogue, ensuring consistent implementation across entities, countries, and markets. Engage confidently with 1LoD, senior management, and audit on risk identification, governance, and management, driving clear outcomes.
- Improve efficiency through continuous improvement and standardization under the global framework. Escalate issues promptly and proportionately, ensuring risks are managed and decisions are well governed.
To be successful you will:
- Experience in risk management at a Globally Significant Financial Institution (GSFI). Understands the impact of resilience risk within HSBC Group and its commercial context and strategic ambitions. A good level of knowledge of the relevant regulatory landscape and ability to assess the impact of proposed changes in regulatory rules to the bank, especially those pertaining to resilience risk.
- Knowledge of a financial institution’s business model, products, and key risk drivers. A deep understanding and technical expertise of resilience risk, including how this risk can be identified, assessed, monitored, controlled, and mitigated where relevant.
- Ability to lead and promote a strong risk control culture and continually improve risk awareness. Proven ability to develop networks with key stakeholders in a matrix structure.
- Support a multi-locational team of professionals. Providing expert advice and robust challenge, delivering risk management policies and managing risks and controls.
- This role is expected to role‑model HSBC’s ‘How We Lead’ framework by creating a high‑performance, high‑care culture, using our common leadership language, behaviors and tools to deliver better outcomes for our customers, colleagues and stakeholders. Ability to present complex technical concepts and results to non-technical audiences in a persuasive and compelling manner.

- Relevant qualifications / certificates / experience. A BA or BS University Degree, advanced degrees preferable, (e.g. MBA, MSc, PhD)
- Support the management of risk across a large complex banking group. Manage multiple stakeholder relationships across the HSBC matrix.
- Operate and influence within a changing and rapidly developing regulatory environment. Continually support HSBC's approach to conduct and cultivate a positive risk-aware culture, which is designed to ensure we deliver fair outcomes for our customers and do not disrupt the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.
- Maintain awareness of operational risk and minimize the likelihood of it occurring, including its identification, assessment, mitigation and control, loss identification and reporting in accordance with the HSBC risk management. Adopt a risk management and internal control structure, referred to as the Three Lines of Defense, to ensure it achieves its commercial aims while meeting regulatory and legal requirements and its responsibilities to stakeholders, customers and staff. All staff must familiarize themselves and always adhere to the role and supporting responsibilities they play in the Three Lines of Defense.
