Senior Tech Specialist - Distributed Compute

Role purpose

The Distributed Compute team is a cornerstone of HSBC's technology organization. We are responsible for building and managing the on-premise infrastructure that powers the bank's critical business applications on Linux and Windows platforms. Our work involves not only delivering the capacity that new projects need to innovate but also modernizing and strengthening our technology landscape by replacing legacy systems and ensuring compliance with the highest global standards for security and performance.

We are seeking a Senior Tech Specialist - Distributed Compute (Linux/Windows) to join our strategic team. You will be a key player in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the server environments that support the bank's operations. This role is ideal for an engineer with solid and proven experience who is passionate about automation, operational excellence, and possesses deep knowledge of both operating systems and hardware. Your contribution will be vital to ensuring quality and agility in infrastructure delivery.

Main activities: 

  • Install, configure, and manage physical (Dell, Lenovo) and virtual (VMware) servers on RHEL and Windows Server platforms, ensuring they comply with HSBC's global standards.
  • Maintain and harden the infrastructure by applying patches, managing updates, and leading vulnerability remediation efforts to ensure security and regulatory compliance.
  • Design, build, and enhance automation processes using tools like Ansible, Jenkins, and scripting (Bash/PowerShell) to streamline infrastructure delivery, reduce manual effort, and ensure the quality of every deployed server.
  • Collaborate with Networking, Storage (SAN), and Application teams to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure issues, ensuring end-to-end service stability.
  • Actively participate in the infrastructure lifecycle, from planning and design to deployment and support, using Git/GitHub for versioning code and configurations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Solid and proven experience in roles such as Systems Administrator, Infrastructure Engineer, or DevOps, with a focus on on-premise environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience in administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server.
  • Proven experience in automation and configuration management with Ansible.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD tools like Jenkins and version control systems like Git/GitHub.
  • Proficiency in English (intermediate-advanced), capable of holding technical conversations with global teams.
  • A problem-solving mindset, with the ability to analyze complex challenges and propose effective, scalable solutions.
