Role purpose
Special Credit Unit (North America) operates within the ‘Professional Services’ operating model and deals with high risk credits (secured), extended to small businesses, middle market, large corporates as well as global banking customers in US.
The SCU officers manage/ co-manage a portfolio of criticized/classified or exit loan relationships including Commercial Real Estate, derivative products, and settlement limits alongside On-shore Senior SCU Managers catering primarily to the Mid Market, Large Corporate, Commercial Real Estate, Asset Based Lending and Global Banking segments. Objective is to reduce criticized, classified and/or non-performing assets to maximize the timely recovery of assets through collection and/or restructure, including rehabilitation and return to the line.
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Business
The jobholder shall have the following responsibilities: -
- Closely monitor high risk credits & recommend an appropriate workout strategy in collaboration with onshore senior RMs or independently, in case of Full Responsibility (direct relationship management) from GSC, to bring them to the best resolution for the bank.
- Undertake thorough credit analysis, risk assessment, day to day management, loss estimation, collateral coverage estimation on assigned portfolio of bilateral and syndicated relationships.
- Perform impairment analysis in compliance with IFRS9 guidelines for exposures with default risk ratings. Also participate in Lender call to evaluate strategies at the Bank Group level and execute HBUS workout plans in accordance.
- On select exposures from GB segment, formulate restructure or exit resolution strategies as well as determine appropriate risk ratings alongside onshore officers within a time frame of 36 months or less to minimize credit impairments.
- Develops, recommends and implements, with assistance of more senior officers where required, cost-effective strategies to collect the Company's claim in a workout or liquidation including re-negotiation, lawsuit and/or bankruptcy / reorganization.
- Assist senior RMs in negotiating with debtors, guarantors and third parties to implement on a documented basis the Company's maximum recovery of its claims.
- Ensures timeliness and accuracy of responses, adherence to internal policies and external regulations and maximize contributions to economic profit.
- Coordinates activities with other areas of the Company as required to ensure effective and timely problem resolution. All to benefit business unit P&L.
- "Shadow Management" - now termed Advisory Support - for criticized credits that have received approval to stay with the business segment line area. This may include participation in customer contact, risk rating determination and collateral coverage estimates. Provide support in risk assessment and develop appropriate strategies for rehabilitation or exit of relationship.
- Participate and contribute in multi-party discussions along with Onshore Relationship Manager where Bank Counsel, Customer, Customer Counsel, Lending group representatives are involved.
- Project Participation - co-manage or support as designated on behalf of HBUS WCRM.
- Implementation of the operating procedures.
- Liaison with respective business area on quality and workflow.
- Management of the workflows to ensure efficient operation of the unit.
- Development of MI to monitor quality / quantity of outputs.
- Ensure business continuity and stability.

- Assist the line manager in ensuring uninterrupted business operations and delivering flagship projects. Lead and participate in various business projects, Data Governance, and periodic credit reporting as required.
- Prepare for audit, regulatory initiatives and internal projects pertaining to credit risk management.

Academic qualification and Experience Required:
- Academics – Post -Graduate degree in accounting/ business/ finance/ economics/ related field or equivalent. Qualifications in Finance/ CA/ ICWA/ CS/ CAIIB preferred.
- 7+ years of post-qualification experience in handling business or commercial credits and dealing with customers and government agencies or equivalent (relevant loan workouts and/or commercial lending and/or commercial recovery experience).
Skills/Certifications required:
- In-depth understanding of accounting, financial analysis, credit products i.e. all fund & non fund based credit products viz. – term loans, OD/CC, LC/BG, bill discounting, factoring, forex loans.
- Good knowledge of International Trade Financing, treasury / derivative products will be preferred.
- Ability to analyze loan documentation including syndicated credit agreements, analyze complex corporate financial statements as well as personal net worth statements.
- Ability to negotiate loan terms both directly with borrowers and work with large loan bank groups.
- Strong analytical skills with ability to quickly interpret data & facts to arrive at meaningful conclusions and assess the business/ financial prospects of the borrowers.
- Ability to work with outside legal counsel in litigation matters and loan and credit agreement amendments, interface professionally and support third party vendors, handle loan sales and to manage other real estate owned property (ORE).
- Working knowledge of internal loan systems and loan approval system.
- Strong team player able to work cooperatively with existing SCU RMs and SCU/WMR Management.
- Understand the basics of US bankruptcy and bankruptcy law.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Credit Policy, Lending Officer Procedures and Underwriting Guidelines and collateral/security lien procedures.
- Ability to be flexible and adjust to the demands of information project requirements driven by senior management and regulators
- Excellent written and verbal English skills.
- Demonstrated negotiations, problem-solving, communications, decision - making and persuasion skills. Strong analytical skills with ability to quickly interpret data & facts to arrive at meaningful conclusions and assess the business/ financial prospects of the borrowers.
- Knowledge of application of law as it applies to banking, business loans, bankruptcy, contracts, securities, Uniform Commercial and Real Estate Codes will be preferred.
