About the business area

Technology at HSBC Sheffield helps keep the bank moving. Our teams build the digital platforms, systems and products that customers and colleagues use every day. They help protect data, improve digital experiences and make banking work better at scale.

Within this, our Engineering teams build and support the technology that helps the bank run smoothly and respond to changing customer and business needs. It’s about creating secure, scalable and reliable solutions that are built to last.

This insight programme is designed for students studying at universities in Yorkshire and the East Midlands, or for those whose registered home address is within 80 miles of Sheffield, even if they’re studying somewhere else in the UK.

It’s a chance to experience life in our Sheffield technology hub, explore the kinds of roles available here and see whether a future in technology at HSBC could be the right fit for you.

Who you are

We’re looking for students graduating in 2029, who already have some coding skills and want to keep developing them. You enjoy solving problems, working with others and using technology to make a difference. You don’t need to know everything already, what matters most is your mindset, your curiosity and your willingness to learn.

This programme could be a strong fit if you’re studying at a university in Yorkshire or the East Midlands, and/or your registered home address is within 80 miles of Sheffield. It’s also for students who want genuine insight into technology careers in financial services, are interested in opportunities that don’t require long-distance relocation, and are proactive about building their future.

What you’ll do

This programme is based in our Sheffield Tech Centre, where you’ll spend time getting a real sense of what it’s like to work in our technology teams. You’ll take part in interactive learning sessions and skills workshops that help you build your understanding of the work we do and the skills that matter in technology roles.

You’ll meet current graduates and senior colleagues, giving you the chance to hear about their experiences, ask questions and learn from people already building their careers here. You’ll also explore different technology roles and get a clearer picture of the pathways into our internship and graduate programmes. Any internship or graduate scheme offer you receive following this programme and a successful interview would be for a role based in Sheffield, with three days per week working in the office.

Along the way, you’ll build confidence, develop practical insight and leave with a better understanding of how your existing skills could grow into a career in technology.

Why this programme exists

We want to build stronger connections with talented students who are studying in the region or have a home here, even if university has taken them elsewhere for now. By focusing on local talent, we’re aiming to create more opportunities for people who can build long-term careers in our Sheffield-based roles.

If you’re studying in the region or have a home nearby and want to explore where technology could take you, we’d love to hear from you.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be available to attend the full two-day, in-person insight event, in Sheffield on 5th to 7th April 2027, from 09:00 to 17:00 each day.
  • Have obtained, or expect to achieve, a 2:1 degree classification or higher, or an overseas equivalent by July 2029
  • Be currently in Year 1 of a three-year degree, or Year 2 of a four-year degree
  • Be fluent in English
  • Be currently studying at a university in Yorkshire or the East Midlands, and/or have a registered home address within 80 miles of Sheffield.
  • Be legally permitted to work in the UK for the full duration of the programme and beyond the end date, without requiring HSBC visa sponsorship

This particular program does not satisfy the Home Office eligibility criteria for visa sponsorship. We therefore can only progress applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they are eligible to work in the UK without HSBC sponsorship for the full duration of, and beyond, the programme end date. We cannot progress applications from candidates who apply with a graduate visa as you would not be eligible for sponsorship by HSBC when your current visa expires. You will need to confirm what visa you hold, if any, and its expiry date when you apply for us to verify your eligibility when you apply.

Due to the limited number of places on our insight programme, we are only able to consider candidates who will not require onward sponsorship after graduation.

Additional information

We only accept one application per recruitment cycle so please take time to explore our opportunities before applying as we may not be able to transfer your application to other vacancies.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and we may close this vacancy earlier than the advertised closing date if we receive a high volume of applications. Please apply as soon as possible to be considered.

This insight programme may offer candidates the potential opportunity to fast-track onto our internship programme based in Sheffield or further experiences, however this is not a guarantee.
