Engineering - Internship
Central, Hong Kong Island, HK
Area of Interest: Engineering
Business Area: Global Chief Information Office
About the business area
Our technology teams sit within our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO), building the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers and colleagues use every day, keeping assets and data secure, and delivering exceptional digital experiences.
Who you are
We’re looking for curious, driven problem-solvers who love collaborating and are excited about using technology to solve real-world problems. What matters most is your mindset, your eagerness to learn, your approach to challenges, and how you work with others.
You could be a great fit if you’re:
- A natural collaborator: You would be happy working with people from all backgrounds – across teams, countries and cultures. Great engineering requires teamwork, so you’re comfortable sharing ideas and listening to others.
- A problem solver: You like breaking down complex problems, thinking through challenges carefully and finding smart, logical solutions.
- Focused on quality: You always want to deliver the best work and enjoy bringing your ideas to life through high-quality code.
- Self-motivated and driven: You take pride in your work, take ownership of what you do, and want to keep improving. You’re always looking for answers, new skills, and ways to help your team succeed.
- Eager to learn: Technology moves fast – and so do you. You’re excited to explore new tools, platforms, and ways of working to keep innovating and improving.
- Self-aware: You’re mindful of how your actions and communication come across to others. You can work thoughtfully with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
What you’ll do
As an engineering intern, you could be working on a wide range of exciting projects – what you work on will depend on your team, but wherever you are, you’ll be playing a role in developing technology that supports over 200,000 people and 40 million customers around the world.
Here’s a taste of what you could get involved in:
- See HSBC’s digital-first approach in action: Work in teams developing new products and services, enhancing existing ones, and providing software support that keeps our global business moving.
- Understand how we run our Engineering practice: Meet with engineers, architects, and other colleagues across the business.
- Get hands-on: Work with some of the latest code frameworks, programming languages, and AI tools, while learning how we blend software development and operations to deliver faster and better solutions.
- Live projects: Monitor performance, spot and solve technical issues, and recommend improvements to keep everything running smoothly.
What you’ll learn
You’ll get a mix of technical training, skills development, and hands-on experiences that will help you kickstart your career as an engineer. You’ll develop an understanding of how we design, test, and maintain the systems that power how we work, drive efficiencies, and enable change across HSBC.
Here’s what’s in store:
- Technical development: From classroom sessions to self-led learning, you’ll get the chance to explore new coding languages, tech stacks, and engineering best practices.
- Skills development: From workshops to on-the-job coaching, you’ll develop key skills that will help you progress your career as a professional in technology. You’ll also gain wider skills by participating in community and volunteering projects linked to your local HSBC office.
By the end of the programme, you’ll have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take your next step – and if you perform well, you could secure your place on our graduate programme to continue your career in technology at HSBC.
